anyone else quite this nerdy?

Post by Dugan Nash »

I just spent almost $900 of my tax return on a CCNA/CCNP cisco router kit. Routers/switches running the 12.4 OS so I can get a little network goin on and do labs on and shit. Cant wait to get a better job.

I'm speccing out a rackmount system at home with a 4U file server with 20 drives (starting with 6x1TB drives in RAIDZ 5 + 1 hotspare and 4x1.5TB drives in RAIDZ to use as a VTL for a total of 9.5TB - it'll expand to a hotspare for the 1.5TB drives and swap out the 1TBs for 2TB once they hit about $90 each), a 2U UPS, and a managed 16-port gigabit switch (deciding between an IOS-based switch or HP ProCurve - price is the deciding factor really) with some 802.1ax support so I can do channel bonding (because I'd rather do that than network load balancing on the OS). I'm going to run VMWare ESXi and an OpenSolaris host with xVM/Virtualbox so I can run uTorrent server-side along with iTunes alongside a Linux VM for FUSE just for mp3fs while using dtrace scripts to monitor my drives better than SMART ever could. The whole setup is going to run me about $1500 I estimate on top of the parts I have already, about $600 on a rack.

My job is to build out a cloud service platform that'll eliminate the need for CCNAs and MCSEs in most organizations.

Your move, computer janitors.

I spend a thousand bucks on model trains last year....

Probably should have spent it on whiskey, but that's not the point...
