desert guitar tone

I'm trying to figure out if this is a legitimate genre of music, or just a certain type of guitar tone or what. And are there any bands or artists that perform specifically this.
The only examples I can think of are:

I guess its just using alot of reverb and echo, and they usually play it in movies to signify like the last gas station in the middle of death valley or desperados or something.

i always considered the reel ten tone to be an odd psychedelic offshoot of surf. desert guitar tone automatically brings up the beefy, dirty sound josh homme had with kyuss for me... it's weird i don't see any association between reel ten and the desert. might just be me though. i love that song so much.

definitely some country twang in there too, yeah. i don't hear it ever on teevee though, all i ever hear in commercials these days is third rate yann tiersen and sigur ros rip-offs trying to make commercials magical or some fucking nonsense.
