The word he is looking for is Man. You might not get it, but there is a rancid association between working tirelessly to make the wealthy more money and the gender itself. You're a grad student, and don't get me wrong RUSS THE GREAT FOE OF CHRISS NECROSIS I assume you deserve great praise for your work. Your work is real work. Even if they forget your name, you will contribute a tiny bit to the sum of human knowledge and that portion will outlive us all.
Most working people are not doing that. They are working tirelessly to make a rich man richer, they are submitting themselves to un-debatable authority of an owner and they are doing it because "they are expected to." What does a person who works fifty/sixty hous a week have to show for it? Their lifestyle, and their boss might get a new car. They might be stupid people who spend hundreds of dollars a month of cable and jewlery, but they are basically the subaltern, despite their ability to read and write. Americans have been robed by the right, and we pay every day we throw our lives away at our jobs.

We have the most vicious labor laws in the developed world and we cheerfully inflicted a race to the bottom on our poor with people who live in feudalist societies that are transitioning to dictatorships. Answer to get this thread back on track!: We work 40 hours a week because the spatial and demographic practices of farming forced hunter/gatherers onto the most worthless pieces of land, even when they were very efficient, and a similar but more abstract process has happened with the modern, bureaucratic, urban division of labor.
