Measure to legalize marijuana will be on California's November ballot
Supporters of the initiative collected well more than the 433,971 signatures needed for it to go before voters in the fall, again putting the state at the forefront of the nation's drug debate.
An initiative to legalize marijuana and allow it to be sold and taxed will appear on the November ballot, state election officials announced Wednesday, triggering what will probably be a much-watched campaign that once again puts California on the forefront of the nation's debate over whether to soften drug laws.

If the state was smart they would give up the ridiculous failure that the "war on drugs" has become, it would actually help them get out debt, and lower non-violent criminals that are overflowing our prisons ... it just makes sense, (so of course it will fail)

are you sure? its always been my understanding that police and prisons are often in support of legalization. 2008 in texas it was the cops who initiated reform laws to greatly reduce incarceration for pot. in 2000 i remember in nevada the cops made a huge campaign for legalization. i dont know maybe its different there.

Marijuana is a powerful and dangerous psychoactive substance. Society and our
children do not need another dangerous substance in their lives. Simply stated the use of
Marijuana is not and never will be good for the success, education, and well-being of our
society.
When a person examines the two known abused drugs in our society, alcohol and
tobacco, from a Public Health standpoint, those two substances would be recommended
today to be banned. The California Police Chiefs Association clearly understands that this
will not occur. But, the discussion of Marijuana is important especially in light of the
money being infused by the Drug Alliance and their ability to prey on unsuspecting
compassionate people of our great state. The issue should be discussed openly by not
only law enforcement personnel but by school, public health, drug treatment, and other
concerned professionals concerned about the affects of Marijuana on our constituents.
not only are they opposed to legalization of pot, they would ban alcohol and tobacco as well
btw, they oppose legalization because the WoD provides jobs to cops and prison guards. they literally want to lock up human beings in cages for decades so that other people can have jobs paid for with tax money. this is actually considered better than just giving people tax money directly and is not in any way considered insanely evil

Plus don't cops get bonuses for more arrests/tickets wrote? I think thats how it works in some places anyway....

Regardless, it'll happen eventually. I won't really consider it legal until (regular) jobs stop testing for it. That's really the only thing that's stops anyone from smoking it for any significant length of time.

I think your confusion is between individual cops and judges and such, people that understand how terribly the drug war is hurting this country, and the corrupt scum that benefit from the private prison system. FUCKING FUCK how are private prisons legal jesus fucking christ...
Keeping weed illegal keeps jobs open. It isn't like Baskin Robbins is going to hire all the cops, prison guards, and dudes selling bags of weed that lose their current income.
There has been enough public polling to make it appear like the measure has a shot, that said, the right is more likely to turn out in big numbers during a mid-term this year than the left, that said the appearance of this measure may bring a lot more people out of the woodwork to vote, a trick Bush and Rove pulled by encouraging anti gay marriage initiatives in a bunch of swing states.
