Lycia
This group has shitty lyrics, repetitive, 4/4 and typical song structures, plus their songs all sound the same.
HOWEVER...they use a lot of reverb to great effect. It doesn't matter how predictable everything is...it's about atmosphere over songcraft. Soundscapes over structure. The wrist-slitting mood takes priority over everything else. Just echo the shit out of your instruments and make it sound like gothic teen angst despair, and I'm happy. And by happy, I mean sad and despairing.
"Great soccer game, gang! Now let's listen to 'The Burning Circle And Then Dust' followed by 'Cold'!"

Well, you always go with the oldschool.
To the newcomers: Burning Circle/Cold. Trust me.
(Though "A Brief Glimpse" is pretty damn good.)

Yeah, Burning Circle/Cold are two untouchable dark classics as far as LDS is concerned.
Hopefully, they're re-release that Bleak-Vane album on CD at some point.
David Galas's solo stuff is awesome, too:

Kinda...but I'd take a handful of post-Cold tracks for a best-of compilation. "Tainted" is really good, for instance.Dann O))) wrote:"Cold" is fantastic too...they kinda got shitty after that.

Shit, do you have that Bleak album? I've been waiting forever for the torrent (of the previously existing cd that I have in my album collection) to download. I love 'Cold, Black Room'.Lord Darksoul wrote:Yeah, Burning Circle/Cold are two untouchable dark classics as far as LDS is concerned.

That David Galas song sounds pretty nice. Very similar style. I admit I don't know if he's a current or ex-member of Lycia or not.

Degenerated into a small fanboy-only Youtube thread, I see. I'm fine with that.

Haha...I have no problem with drum machines, I've been listening to industrial half of my life. But if they had a real drummer, maybe that would force them to abandon their droning/repetitive style, which maybe works in their favor? Some bands are better being simple. Even with ass lyrics. But they're shrouded in reverb anyway, so it doesn't matter. Just sound ghostly, and sing along to the drum machine. Make me feel 17 again.Bored, Esq. wrote:I think a lot of their rep still rests on Cold but they had good stuff elsewhere, as people have been saying. That fucking drum machine gets to me sometimes, though. Very cool band.
Projekt Records put out some good stuff...and then a lot of really, really bad stuff...
If Cold is your favorite, surely you enjoy Burning Circle...I see the two as companion pieces. The earlier stuff sounds just as suicidal, but the drum machines are even more dated. And the later stuff is okay, but written around the guy's girlfriend, Tara Vanflower or whoever. More new-agey, especially with the female vocals, and less I-want-to-kill-myself. But that era did produce "Tainted". But Burning Circle and Cold are the golden years; the definitive sound.

The good?
Lycia
Love Spirals Downwards
Soul Whirling Somewhere (the first 2)
Lovesliescrushing
Got to give Rosenthal credit....he pretty much has run that label the way he wants.
Too bad he's a bit too self-indulgent, especially his own band, Black Tape For A Blue Girl (ugh).

Every band's got their pluses and minuses...Luca Blight wrote:great band, but some of the shittiest lyrics I've ever had the displeasure of hearing...
but you don't listen to music like this for the lyrics anyways. great use of repetition and reverb.

Re: Lycia
I was always partial to "Estrella", even though the lyrics definitely make me want to punch myself in the head. The cheesiness of the drum machine is kind of charming though.

Re: Lycia
that'd be interesting, im workin on it but not havin much success, cause i suck worse at the drum machine than Lycia ever could. my thing is bass, keyboard, drum machine and vocals but i only know how to do 3 of those 4 things. maybe it's more a combination of Lycia and OM/Halo/Big Business/insert bass and drum duo here.Bored, Esq. wrote:It would be awesome if a band combined Godflesh and Lycia's sound.

Re: Lycia
Both Godflesh (their early stuff anyway) and Lycia use the simplest beats possible. I don't know anyone who still uses an external/whatever drum machine...but I seem to remember them having preset beats...evildeadone wrote:that'd be interesting, im workin on it but not havin much success, cause i suck worse at the drum machine than Lycia ever could. my thing is bass, keyboard, drum machine and vocals but i only know how to do 3 of those 4 things. maybe it's more a combination of Lycia and OM/Halo/Big Business/insert bass and drum duo here.Bored, Esq. wrote:It would be awesome if a band combined Godflesh and Lycia's sound.
