They paddled in Michigan up to the 70's or early 80's. I got it twice, both times by this nazi-German bitch that was my 2nd grade teacher. I never got it from my third grade teacher, but he did it in a most awesome way. You had to get next door and ask another teacher to use her paddle, so all the kids in that class knew you were getting it, then you'd have to take it back to his classroom where he'd put a chair in front of the class and paddle you in front of the entire class. I wish they still paddled... some kids need it.

When I lived in Abilene Kansas I kicked a sink in the school bathroom when I was six years old and a piece of the porcelain chipped. I'm pretty sure the principle wanted to paddle me. He came into the first grade class with a look on his face like the tough cop in an action movie ready to interrogate the main suspect that just got brought in. He knelt down by my desk and stared at me twirling the piece of chipped off sink in his fingers and said some intimidating stuff while I held my head down and then he eventually walked away.
