Suffering from an urge to play Dungeons & Dragons

I'm missing an important piece of my cultural heritage. I've never really played a game of D&D, or any other tabletop roleplaying game. I spent a decent amount of time as a kid reading the sourcebooks and novels. 4 gigs of 2nd edition AD&D shit is sitting on my external, downloaded years ago. I'm in existential pain.
Today I made my girlfriend be my dungeon master. I have her a coin and a copy of the Monstrous Manual from 1993 and made her flip to random pages making up encounters with monsters as she went along. I beat them all...

We didn't finish. Right now my character is halfway to a magic castle, with a wood elf who thinks I'm going to give him the treasure when we get there, and a golden chromatic dragon. I'm armed with a magic baseball.

james and his girl were cuddled up that afternoon, and a strange tension filled his bedroom.
"baby... will you do something for me ?"
"of course james, anything. you know that."
"ok this is going to sound sort of strange but..."
james' girl shifted with anticipation. what could he want ? was this going to be dressing up as harley quinn again ? no, he was always straight to the point about that...
"well i'll just get right to it. this is a d20. it's what you roll when you attack me."

Been pondering this lately, too. Downloaded a bunch of PDFs. I'm sure I could lure a couple of unwaries into helping me cut my teeth here.

I've never played either. I've recently seen this
http://www.darthsanddroids.net/ as well. It uses clips from the phantom menace as illustrations of a role playing campaign and makes the thing sound quite fun.

I never played in my youth either but I'd play today. I've played enough crpgs based on DnD I might as well play the real thing.

It's really complicated. You have to buy a lot of books. Then you have to roll for your character. I rolled a 4 which means I have to play as an Elder Gnoll. I'm responsible for maintaining the cultural values of gnoll society, and defend the younglings against Sith-aligned bugbears. I have a family to support too. It's a lot of responsibility. You might think it's all about having epic adventures with gaint muscles through the kingdoms of power metal, but you'd be wrong. For example you might wind up being a chaotic neutral Fungus Gnome tinkerer.
Which means basically you have to roll dice for the right to successfully forage for grubs in a fantasy world of your own creation.
I think I should just invent my own d20 game and make my friends play through a campaign based on the Dark Carnival.
