I think since Dethklok embraces cliches, one of them is the sound of Metal itself. The roots of Extreme Metal lie in NWOBHM and Speed Metal, and nowadays, in my opinion, that sound has a certain cliche charm to it. The same sort of charm in bullet belts and other visual cliches you can think of.
That sound helps them to sound less harsh but still recognizably Metal...which helps with their popularity.(as a band that people actually listen to rather than music that happens to be on a TV show.) Their sound is distinct because they are going for the sounds of a broad encompassing cliche rather than a specific style. That doesn't make them particularly original though.
