yeah- two tricks:

if you have the yellow powder shit that adds lightning to your weapon, use that.

when you first get up there, climb the tower and kill the archers. go back down and walk forward until you trigger the boss guy. run all the way back, climb the tower, and do a drop attack on him before he flies up there. you'll halve his health basically if you have lightning. then you can pretty much just hack him to death if you're fast

You have to find the Wooden Catalyst. You equip the Wooden Catalyst like you would any other weapon, then use the regular attack like any other weapon to use the magic. Also, make sure you're locked on to your intended target first, otherwise it will go wherever it wants to.

if a fire is "kindled" you get more than at other fireplaces. i.e. if you go to the one at the little hub area you'll have 10 again

i found a surprisingly good early game sword and shield combo but it's a little difficult to get. basically you need to have:

-10 str
-14 faith
-master key

from the main hub fireplace, go down. take the elevator, and get down to "ground level." take a right and find an enclosed spiral staircase and take it up and after you open the door you'll be in the valley of the drakes. cross the first bridge, go left, and you'll come to what looks like a dead dragon. if you're fast you can snag the sword and shield before it wakes up and kills you

sword does like 100 physical and 100 magic plus bonuses from faith i think. a far sight better than any vanilla sword you're going to find that early

i found that powder when i was making my way up the castle. you need the master key IIRC
