Namco Bandai's community manager has taken to Reddit to lay out the details of the PlayStation 3 Dark Souls II beta test. Those selected for the first round of testing will receive their codes today.

Codes will be delivered at approximately 11 am Pacific via PSN today. The purpose of the exercise is to stress-test the servers rather than a full beta.

Players will be dropped into the middle of the game with almost no direction, but those that are selected (and successfully redeem a code) for the October 12 test will be guaranteed entry into later rounds.

As a reminder, redeem your code as quickly as possible. Once 5,000 people have done so, the test is closed. The next round, to be held on October 22, will include a wider group.

Dark Souls II is slated for release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on March 11, 2014.

This is a server stress test and not really an opportunity to enjoy the game at its fullest.

I was initially interested in doing this, but I have since backed out. I want a pure, unadulterated experience with the new game when it gets released. Been avoiding news about the game since. Trying not to think about it too much...

supposedly the beta takes place in a non-game area, but i agree... i'd rather go in completely fresh and not know any of the enemies or how the game feels. i'm about to check my PS3, and if i got a code i'd probably just post it here if anyone wants it (assuming it works that way).

I have no willpower so I am in for the beta.

Beta invites are out and apparently it is playable offline. Happy I have a day off! :awesome:

I think there will be a larger beta later this month...22nd or 23rd? Nice work by Namco and Sony. “Beta codes got out at 11 PST.” Yeah, 11 p.m.

Edit: next beta is codes on the 22nd, beta on the 26th.

Are they sending these codes via PSN or e-mail?

US version was a PSN code. Euro one is some weird sign up for a ticket and maybe get in, not exactly sure but I am sure they're doing it as stupidly as possible.

Edit: Yeah, check the Dark Souls 2 facebook page for Eurobeta. The US one was a universal code, spread quickly around the intermet and some.people are angry they didn't get in . Talking about false Dark Souls fans getting to play it, stealing THEIR beta spot and that they spent 50000000 hours in both Souls games because they are troo. You'd think out of all gaming fanbases, Souls fans would appreciate a beta invasion like that haha.

I love love love these games but the fanbase is fucking awful (like every passionately douchey fanbase I guess). I also hate EpicNameBro just because of his name.

damn, the reeenaissance is making it hard to find threads

"- Server load test using massive simultaneous logins from all areas"

i've been getting nonstop failed logins trying to access the beta, so hopefully they're collecting some SOLID data from this...

beat this shit finally. despite having ridiculously low endurance i just hornet ring/boost fire defense ring'd him and got like 4-5 parries in a row and didnt get touched. +10 great fire scythe. got some dumb ending where i caught on fire er whatever. i just instinctively lit the bon fire and didnt know what my options were. :wank:

stomping through the burg again like a gangster is already fun. i killed the first asylum demon in one hit from above. best game ever

Should have said fuck the fire and became the Dark Lord. I love that final battle so much despite it being a tad easy.

not even close for me. the only bosses that took me more attempts than gwyn were probably O&S, ceaseless discharge and four kings.

i didn't look up anything about any boss in the game except ceaseless discharge because i had no clue how to beat him and wasn't making any progress (and i used the glitch of course, and if anyone pretends they figured that out on their own they're full of shit). i didn't know i could parry gwyn and didn't even attempt it. my build wasn't ideal, i was probably about SL60-70, and i'm guessing he took me 10ish tries.

Gwynn wasn't too bad for me, but both times I faced him I was almost level 100. Kalameet was by far the hardest boss for me, even though I had a ridiculously overpowered weapon, and knew his moveset. Also, I could never find anyone to help me out. I tried cutting off his tail too, but gave up after succeeding to hit it twice out of like 15 attempts.
