both of those sound great - the first one especially. i've been listening to a lot of solo and duo records lately. mostly stuff on Erstwhile because I love that label, but Coltrane/Ali, Brotzmann/Bennink, and Roscoe Mitchell too. that fits right in there.

I so badly want to hear the 4CD 'Live In Japan' Coltrane set... but it's super fucking expensive anywhere I can find it

It's worth it. Probably the best live album ever.

http://www.amazon.com/Live-Japan-John-C ... B000003N61

This lists it as a single disc, but shows a tracklisting for four discs. Several used for cheaper too. There's a few listings for under $40 on eBay, but they're only shipping within the United States. You're in Korea, right?

yeah

I don't use eBay

it's 4 CDs, but only 6 tunes; the shortest track on the set is 25 minutes, 10+ minute solos abound, disc 4 consists of a 57 minute version of My Favorite Things... shit sounds godly

Amazon UK has it for a cunt hair less than 100 quid... hmm, I wonder if I can order from Amazon US with shipping to Korea using a UK bank account...? guess I'll find out shortly...!

I guess I can! good lookin' out dude, fuck knows why there's such a massive discrepancy between the Amazon US and Amazon UK prices but I just ordered that shit for less than half of what it'd cost to order it from Amazon UK

nice!

I'm guessing all Impulse! reissues are still manufactured in the US, so it must cost more to have it shipped to the UK, and retailers pass that cost along to the buyer. Plus there are all kinds of fixed price tiers that distributors and wholesalers abide by when ordering inventory from overseas. I know when we get Impulse! stuff at work, we get it for pretty cheap compared to foreign labels who are reissuing records by the same artist. A Coltrane LP from Impulse! can be $8 to $10 cheaper than a single LP reissued by Doxy (from Italy).

Anything more than a single disc and that gap widens. All the cool 20th century classical we get from Wergo and Edition RZ costs almost double what it would be were the labels based here instead of overseas.

just got this. :drooly:

it's only a year after dark days, but it sounds so much more focused. I guess hank drake became hamid drake and they got a more capable bassist. anderson's ideas are so clear

also a charles gayle record

just heard some killer shit on the columbia station...coltrane with don cherry, ed blackwelll and charlie haden (ornette's band), record called the avant garde. it got played in mono, fucking ripped. some ornette tunes. I can't believe I've never heard that before.

also I saw evan parker the other night with sylvie courvoisier at the stone, and it was one of the better improv sets I've ever seen. check her out if you're not familiar

Here's some shit I've been digging recently:

Dave Rempis Percussion Quartet:

New Mary Halvoson. It's probably the best stuff from her I've heard:

Dave Holland w/ Anthony Braxton. Absolute must-have:

Power of the Horns. Really stupid name, but great big band free jazz:

I also love the new record by Frank Rosaly, Cicada Music. It's the best jazz record I've heard this year, but I can't find any clips to post.

I'll check out that frank rosaly. haven't even heard of that shit.

picked up a few things at the downtown music gallery the other day that I'm really digging. this sylvie courvoisier trio record w/ joelle leandre and susie ibarra...I wasn't at all familiar with courvoisier until I saw her perform with evan parker last month and it was one of the better improv gigs I've ever been to. bruce recommended this new incus release to me- tony oxley's 75th birthday tribute. it's made up of performances from 77 and 93 with bailey, paul rutherford, matt wand...really really focused.

and the new snakeoil record is :awesome: already more into it than the first one. can't get enough ches smith

Definitely into this.

The new Vandermark record, Impressions of PO Music, is fantastic. It's basically a tribute to Joe McPhee, who also plays on it, so it doesn't have the muscle of any of the V5 stuff, but Vandermark definitely found some new ways to kick ass on it. Can't find any links to any of the tunes, though. http://www.freejazzblog.org/2013/10/ken ... t-joe.html

The new Peter Evans trio record, Zebulon, fucking rules, too. There's a 10min sample here: http://moreismorerecords.com/label.html

And here's the Zebulon trio w/ Colin Stetson. It's pretty spectacular.

so that halvorson record...I like it, but I definitely can't back that 'best stuff' endorsement. I need to listen to it more, and admittedly I'm generally attracted to smaller groups, but I still haven't heard anything that tops dragon's head- for me. that record is just a bit darker than the rest, every player is more in focus...

the frank rosaly record, though, I instantly love. I hear some hal russell in this

the fucking broztmann koto thing I posted in recent purchases kills. I have two of these koto records he's done and it's some of my favorite brotzmann playing. gorgeous.

a clip of that brotzmann group

a bunch of good shows coming up around here this month, too...the one I'm most excited about is this group, whose records are magic:

I've seen Michio Yagi play with various people I like over here. I like what she does, but live it's always hit or miss depending on how loud she is in the mix. The last time I saw her she drowned-out Vandermark, which pissed me off and cost me another $40 because I had to go see him again the next night, but the time before that, with O'Rourke, Yosuke Yamashita and Akira Sakata, she was brilliant.

I think I'm burnt out on Nilssen-Love. If he's not playing with people I really like, I find him to be kinda annoying.

I don't know if I've ever posted the following, but it's crazy fucking good. Not strictly jazz, but Mats Gustafsson's in the band, so good enough. This record is one of my faves from the last couple years.

Been listening to nothing but Made To Break this week - Vandermark, Tim Daisy, Devin Hoff and Cristof Kurzmann. Rules fucking hard.

Other good new shit:

Tim Daisy/Dave Rempis - Second Spring (scroll down for a track)

http://aerophonicrecords.com/the-rempis ... nd-spring/

David Dominique - Ritual. I loved this when I first started listening to it. Unsure now.

I've also been getting into some William Parker, who is so consistently great it's kinda unbelievable.

 I've probably seen william parker perform more than any other single player

the duo records w/ hamid drake kill. tony malaby's tamarindo, w/ parker and nasheet waits, is one of my favorite improvised music records. the farmers by nature shit (w/ cleaver and taborn) is beautiful- especially the first record. and "through acceptance of the mystery peace" is astonishingly good. I think that might be his debut as a bandleader? it's 1974. amazing arco playing.

not to beat a dead horse, because I've probably said this a hundred times, but no one is better than nasheet waits
