Dear men, here is a handy “me too” for you to think about! (When I say “women” here plz read it as including non binary and trans folks.)

PARTICIPATION IN RAPE CULTURE CHECKLIST

- You follow a ton of Instagram models whose feeds are mostly T&A (liking Suicide Girls instead of Playboy does not make you feminist or edgy).
- You think your girlfriend or ex girlfriend are particularly special because they get cat called a lot because of some unique quality they have, not because this is just what it’s like to be a woman today.
- When you have sex with women it’s over when you cum; you don’t ask her if she has and don’t care if she does.
- You cat call and hit on women in the street.
- You laugh or stay silent when your friends sexualize and objectify women.
- You openly stare at women who you feel are dressed ‘provocatively.’
- You do not intervene when you see men making women uncomfortable.
- You allow men to talk over and interrupt women.
- You cannot name 10 women writers or artists that you like.
- You don’t speak up when you see the women in your life defending themselves against sexism; instead of thinking ‘they must be tired, I should see if they need help’ you think ‘she can just do it herself.’
- You make advances on women with much less cultural, social, and financial capital and use this differential to your advantage.
- You react badly when women reject you sexually or in a dating context, seeking to insult them or drag them.
- You slam doors or objects when you are mad to intimidate your female partner.
- You sexually idealize the young 18 year old female figure when you are not in the appropriate age range to be doing this.
- You are repulsed by women who wear a lot of makeup or take time on how they look.
- You think women who wear no makeup are ugly.
- You think women exist for your visual pleasure.
- You offer unsolicited sexualized comments on the bodies of women.
- You think women’s nude bodies are inherently sexy or sexual, and the bodies of nude men are funny, silly, or neutral.
- You don’t take no for an answer, and push until it changes to a yes.
- You see a no as a challenge.
- You have sexually touched a woman without her permission.
- You argue with the women in your life, defending Woody Allen, Bill Cosby, Hugh Hefner, David Bowie, etc.
- You think women owe you sex if you are nice to them or buy them a drink.
- You don’t reach out to the women you know when shit like this is in the media.
- You don’t reach out to women you know who have been assaulted or raped.
- You think that women calling out assault are probably mentally ill and keep your distance.
- You tell yourself no men in your life have made women feel unsafe.
- You tell yourself that you have never made a woman feel unsafe.
- You feel defensive about any of this.
