it is really hard to choose between shot and down.

shot has very few good songs but i like skull of a german and blue shot better than anything on down.

down is just boring. it sounds like they were tired.

i liked blue quite a bit, fwiw, but yeah, the quality dipped majorly with down and shot.

Yeah, I liked blue a lot, too. Down does sound pretty lazy, now that you mention it, but shot has this weird thin quality to the recording that I never liked.

Shot was too produced/processed. Didn't they do that with the same guy who recorded an L7 record or two?

I think you could take half of Shot and half of Blue and have one decent record. Down has just as many good songs on it, but I think the recording puts it ahead of the two major label records.

i really think blue is a great record on its own. it is definitely lacking the aggression of their best albums, but the songwriting and musicianship is awesome. i even like the brightness of the production, it fits the oddness of a lot of the songs.

down is boring and shot is really uneven songwriting wise. i agree that shot also sounds shitty, but the songs from shot are better live.

and, most relevant to the thread, i wasn't disappointed by shot like i was with down. when i heard down i remember thinking they were done.

I'm pretty sure they disavowed that record. I saw them touring Blue and the only reason they played "Cold Water" was because I requested it. Capitol didn't even release Blue in Canada; I can't imagine they did much with it anywhere.

You should have been there when TSIB was released and seen them multiple times in that tour to understand that Neurosis should have just stopped right there.

+1.. the only thing I remember from that album is the weird country song playing in the background of the hidden track. I still haven't figured out what that song is, and I don't want to listen to that album.

Completely agree with Phantom Limb. I was so pumped after Terrifyer and that turd was so awful.
The only question that I thought was hard was do I like Kirk, or do I like Picard?

I love Neurosis more than most foods and drinks but god damn the stupid shit people say about them reaches Tool levels of half-headed fandom jackoffery.

No, honestly. The first AtG album I got was TRitSIO, and apart from the violin, I loved the shit out of that one because of how weird it sounded. Then they broke up, came back, I ran to the store all excited, and it turned out this great comeback album that everyone was raving about sounded just like every other fucking Swedish Death Metal band ever. Not bad, but even to my relatively un-jaded teenage ears, it was just too clear I already had like ten copies of this album. Then it became, well, what it became, and it still makes me feel like I don't understand my fellow man like I used to no mo'.

And fuck you, a real hipster'd still be crying about how much better Grotesque was.

Terminal Spirit Disease should've made SotS a non-surprise.

And are really there that many examples of earlier albums where 6/8 guitar riffs are so often paired with a thrash/backbeat?

This album was a joke. No effort at all.

and this one never clicked with me,

I realize super duper artistic mother fuckers expect you to study and invest 234 hours into conditioning to get the art, but eventually I figured fuck that if I'm not digging after 3 or 4 spins, it's not my fault.
