I've only looked at bitcoin since this thread was bumped, but it seems like the FAQ answered all the above questions.

It's been fluctuating a bit lately. A month or so ago the exchange rate was down to like $90 or so.

problem is, I think most of the means to cash out are down and/or under legal investigation. There's a pretty entertaining ( if shit-filled ) thread on Something Awful about it.
