Sorry its a crowdfunder, but I think this is Linux/Android tablet that has a real 4:3 aspect ratio:

thanks for lookin' out! I think a lot of tablets tend to be 4:3ier, right?

I already bought the laptop anyway; don't hate it so much and just use a second monitor at work - the second monitor is above the laptop one which would probably be tougher to pull off if the laptop were 4:3 (i.e. taller) so maybe it's a blessing in disguise? also less deep/tall laptop fits better in the hellish work environment of an airplane seat. silver linings?!?!

No, very very rare outside of ipads, and if they are in that form factor its usually shitty low res 1024 x 768 which is what the gen 1 ipppad and mini ipad are.

linux on arm is pretty sweet, and this is something that would get me back away from using google shit for cheap. its attractive to me because I steal all my textbooks as pdf files and reading them on a 7" tablet or monitor sucks.

yes - got it

I guess I presumed that since ipad was 4:3 everybody would just copy that

derp

I need to work through the logical reasons a tablet is not compelling to me right now... it would be cool to have a paper-reader for on the train

if you just want a PDF reader I have an olde Kindle DX which is the biggest one they ever made that I would get rid of cheap. Its easy to read and I don't think anyone would ever want to steal it. Free 3G internet for life too.

I was more thinking a tablet that would eliminate the need for a laptop at all... but thanks :D

I am using a BeagleBone Black running Ubuntu as my download box for all my pirating needs. That shit seriously rules, it is amazingly fast for that tiny system and it uses less electricity than my electric shaver. It runs rtorrent + OpenVPN with high encryption and that shit get the same speeds as a good desktop system. Best 50 bucks I spent this year.

i have to take this back a bit, looks like linux does run on the ipad. it just runs like dogshit and of course the bootloader isn't open and it doesn't "just work" like this poorpad.

did you make fun of kids who had last years shoes in school?

what case did you get?
I bought one for work
I should liberate it

How many megabits do you need to stream 720p h264? I'll go check.

I have it with no case, that's the way I roll. I don't understand the other question, but if it is about using it as a media player, I have no idea but I don't think it would be a decent player because it does not have a hardware decoder, but maybe it could play 720p. As a media player a Raspberry Pi does much better. If the question is about Internet speeds, it all depends on the bitrate the video was encoded, a decent 720p encode should be something around 5 or 6 mbs.

Oops I assumed it had hardware decode
I wonder if it'd be faster than my atom board at AES which has no hardware AES.

That you would know only after testing it, I have as well and Atom based box and the BBB is faster for some things but slower for other ones. I think a big issue is that the BBB is much faster with the included distro (Angstrom) because it has lots of optimizations for it but then it is missing many packages. I am using Ubuntu at the moment because there is no OpenVPN package for Angstrom, I plan some day later to try compiling OpenVPN for it.
