memes and trolls are no different in their capacity for impact than ads are, and I don't think it's a stretch at all that foreign influence could have been "the" (a?) deciding factor in the 2016 presidential election. nudging a single person from "voting" to "not voting" (or vice versa) doesn't take all that much, and I have no doubt that running an almost totally unopposed pro-trump campaign on social media could have made "the" difference. 126 million people saw ads on facebook that Russia paid for, and these were strategically targeted. in particular, these ads were presented to the black community. sure, we'd expect a drop in black turnout post-obama - 2004 levels would be our null hypothesis - but the turnout was slightly lower than that. I get it - HRC is not very appealing to anyone, but trump is a goddamned birther, was all about lynching the central park five, and his first big career accomplishment was housing discrimination. a black-targeted facebook campaign that emphasized these fuckin' repulsive facts (instead of encouraging black people to "vote from home" or "text in your vote") would have been a substantial swing.

the campaigns would be likely to target swing states. check out the plots (with 100% excel default formatting!) of Fig. 3 here - Ohio & Florida saw serious drops in black turnout, and Wisconsin tanked. I am aware that the voter ID law is probably responsible for most of that, but still: imagine Russia was instead spending to inform people about the proper process for voting even if you don't have an ID.

as for practical outcomes, I've pretty much given up all hope for fairness/justice (more than ever!), but I guess I'd like the government to prevent the same shit from happening again. instead, we're getting the opposite.

none of what I am saying negates your good points about the all-out war on democracy/representation that is taking place. and I am OK with a critique of how much media real-estate is dedicated to russia stuff vs. the gerrymandering, poll-place-closing, and other voter suppression efforts. I am not exposed to that much mainstream news so I feel like I am hearing about all of it at once (almost certainly not in ideal proportion). it's bonkers to hear you argue that the russia interference of 2016 was impotent. overrated? who knows.

So you can really see where I'm coming from here, I want you to reconcile this:

some ads were seen by 126 million people

black people in swing states likely saw a fuckton of ads (or the same ad many times)

this is not even remotely slippery stuff to puzzle out
