Listening to that new Morbid Angel for the first time just now. I may have to make an actual music post this year.

it's really got that Rutan production, huh? sounds like Hate Eternal more than MA to me anyway. but then I've only listened to one MA album start to finish, so...

dude wtf,
Anyway, yeah, the production has Rutan's forehead sweat all over it and I'm not a big fan of that, especially the horrid bass drum sound, but when Trey doesn't have someone talking back to him, what we end up getting is a production like on Heretic, so I guess this is the lesser of two evils.

I believe it was our colleague Stone Fallback II that observed that Morbid Angel's forward-thinking focus on movement and nuanced tonal elements (as opposed to surface-level textures and hooky melodic elements) places them just outside the bounds of my embarrassingly plebeian tastes

I'm trying to process this for a reply, but I'm sort of realizing that I'm way too much of a Morbid Angel geek to even think of them in these terms, somehow. I really wish I wasn't so weird about this band, but I am.

that morbid angel is awful, and I really listened with as open of a mind as I could muster because Formulas is a Favorite

Gave a listen to this album today and i can't help but wonder can Trey Azagthoth not write riffs anymore and when he looks back on their early material, does he not see the incredible difference in quality as compared to what this band has been writing for over twenty years now? How can one possibly be content with such mediocrity when they once achieved greatness in their art?
I don’t dig the solos (there are hardly any solos anyway). I don’t like anything about any of the songs: bad titles, boring riffs, boring leads, bad production, the drums are too loud, the drums too processed, the vocals too loud and overdone, weak guitar tone, awful cover art; it’s just too Hate Eternal and Warfather sounding and looking, heck even last Hate Eternal album wasn't this bad.
I think they are too old and confused, having spent too much time on other things to have any understanding of reality.
Trey is dragging a dead corpse, Morbid Angel needs to rest in peace now.

Trying to cram in stuff from 2017 I haven't listened to yet... goddamn this is a good album. I'm not too familiar with Oxbow but I kinda want to check out everything they've done.
Couldn't get through one listen of the new MA. Ross's review of the last album is the only MA-related joy I've experienced in the last decade.
