I’m pretty sure the Abbots parents are still alive. It must be pretty fucking horrible to outlive both your sons.

every parent would be happy weeping into a Hellyeah T-shirt

right? ... Right?

I have to be honest, I never liked Pantera even when I was a kid

to their credit, they tried to riff out and make things crazy with no apologies

no snare in over half of this song:

I'd be ok with there being precisely zero interesting things about vinnie paul, but this is kinda cute:
"It's really built around the drums and Primal Concrete Sledge wasn't originally part of the record. We were starting the mix process, I had put some mics inside the toms for live and I wanted to test them out. I'd already taken my snare drum down and I just fell into that groove because the snare was gone. My brother comes running out, 'Man, we've got to write one more song. That's just too cool.' I'd never done anything with that kind of a jungle beat with the upbeat on the hi-hat and the kick drums going straight sixteenth notes. It was really different."

around 1995, 1996 ... my parents would not let me listen to pantera. Every tough guy at school was Into it, when I was recording radio rock songs and imagining how tough it all sounded. In that way, they were a bit of a crucible. It all went haywire, didn't it

Apparently the mum is dead.

They meant nothing to me, I don’t really care for any Phil Anselmo side project either.

Now that Vinnie is dead I’m guessing 12 months or less for Phil, Rex, Zak Wylde and pretty much any drummer to do a Pantera reunion because Phil is sick of that B grade money.

That's a great idea, they could open Nascar races and Trump rallies all over.

Dime was a great guitarist; Vinnie Paul just helped to usher in those clicky, sampled drums that have absolutely killed modern metal (is it triggers? I only know it sounds like shit compared to the drum tone on Reign in Blood, World Downfall and/or Ace of Spades). I know others had done that style before him, but they didn't have a metal album debut at #1 on the Billboard chart in 19-fucking-94.

Gonna be a bummer when Lombardo checks out.

I don’t think you can really blame vinnie too much for that plastic drum sound. We had already been seeing this in the underground with Scott Burns production. Plus Lars stupid drum sound on And Justice For All that he insisted on having, the guy who mixed AJFA says Lars pretty much fucked the whole thing up (like he does with most things) for what it’s worth Vince claimed to not use triggers or samples.

Sweet lord vinnie.

Deep dicking the coal chutes of long dead groupies in heaven while lord hitler decapitates baby anselmo who has been snatched from the time stream and brought forth to right the wrongs of precious nathan gale who should have shot don dokken instead.
