Maybe I'm an idiot, but this woman seems to be recommending
1. Don't clean your food
3. Put your murder-food in with your clean food
2. Just consider all your food to be deadly!
what the fucking shit

Re: James answers your coronavirus questions thread
kevin I will say that overall your protocol is great. what I, personally, am doing is deliberately less stringent because sweaty and I are in assumed perpetual quarantine and if we get sick, we're probably going to be fine. I think everyone is wise and sane to take precautions in proportion to the threat posed to their isolation-cluster (or those they interact with in public, for those who can't be shut-ins). when I'm out in public, I treat myself like a carrier, and do my best to minimize theoretical spread.
there's some stuff that's just so easy to do, though... like the outer layer of mail/shipments doesn't even come in the house - just empty/unload it into a clean place inside.
I feel like angela from the AMA is too lax. although I appreciate her saying that even if virus is present on stuff (plastic, steel) after weeks, it's not likely to be infectious. I'd defer to the cornell guy from fvbtvs's vimeo link - he's basically saying the complete opposite of angela (don't just toss stuff into your freezer!)
I think people with serious concerns (e.g. you or the people you live with are especially vulnerable) should not feel insane to do more scrubbing. my thinking with the stuff coming back from the store is that it's likely to have very low levels of BUG, thus it'll take less disinfecting to wipe it out. maybe I'll be dead soon!

so my personal understanding is that scrubbing would be (is!) superior because it helps the disinfecting solution get into all/any nooks & crannies. in practice, in our lab setting where you want to keep microbes out of your human cell culture, we're pretty much just spraying everything and leaving it at that. I have no doubt that scrubbing/rubbing would be better! these practices are all just have their own efficacies. like andrew hinted, ideally we'd be autoclaving everything. I just tried to find actual literature on this (scrubbing vs. not) and found nothing, so I'm happy to get a more solid perspective on this.Geeheeb wrote: ↑Mon Mar 30, 2020 9:14 am@Ross please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that soap solubilizes the membrane of the virus allowing it to dissolve, but without friction this doesn't happen as well. I think that etoh also dessicates the virus, though the friction from rubbing with hand sanitizers does the same thing as soap, but maybe not as well? Think of these SARS-CoV-2 virii as fatty or greasy nanoparticles that you need to dissolve. So just spraying soap on something isn't going to work as well as scrubbing.

Re: James answers your coronavirus questions thread
My thoughts on washing food packaging come from this article: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2004973 (PDF: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101 ... 1.full.pdf )
https://www.who.int/csr/sars/survival_2003_05_04/en/
This WHO site states that:
It is important to remember that fomites are not the primary means on transmission, but this study gives us no info about the survivabilty of SARS-CoV-2 (HCoV-19) in the freezer. We found that viable virus could be detected in aerosols up to 3 hours post aerosolization, up to 4 hours on copper, up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to 2-3 days on plastic and stainless steel. HCoV-19 and SARS-CoV-1 exhibited similar half-lives in aerosols, with median estimates around 2.7 hours. Both viruses show relatively long viability on stainless steel and polypropylene compared to copper or cardboard: the median half-life estimate for HCoV-19 is around 13 hours on steel and around 16 hours on polypropylene. Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of HCoV-19 is plausible, as the virus can remain viable in aerosols for multiple hours and on surfaces up to days.

This WHO site states that:
So while my fridge/freezer is not the dredge of a test tube, I'm not taking the chance. Please also visit that link for more info on virus survival time in urine and stool. FUN!Virus survival in cell-culture supernatant
Only minimal reduction in virus concentration after 21 days at 4°C and -80°C.
Reduction in virus concentration by one log only at stable room temperature for 2 days. This would indicate that the virus is more stable than the known human coronaviruses under these conditions.
Heat at 56°C kills the SARS coronavirus at around 10000 units per 15 min (quick reduction).

Jame has continually failed to answer any of the questions presented throughout the thread. Just another grifter capitalizing on the pandemic — I’m disappointed, but I can’t say I’m surprised.
