A few 90s/alternative albums definitely staved off the true collapse. I remember getting no end of abuse for this but I think a few Smashing Pumpkins albums are definitely up there. I never got into the brit/indie shit like Radiohead or Blur at all, but I think most people would call that the last great chapter.

I never think of the Nirvanas or Stone Temple Pilots or any of that ilk as rock, rock. Like Punk or Metal, I see them in their own sub-universe. Black album can lay next to a Rolling Stones album for all intensive purposes.
