Ultimate Iron Man TPB

I seem to recall everyone hated this when it came out, but it's actually pretty good. Kubert's art is beyond awesome, and the dialogue writing is top-notch. It's just that the overall plot doesn't have a lot of momentum and the ending seems forced.

7/10

Also, I don't understand people's beef with the Ultimate universe, and I never will. Ultimate FF has been consistently awesome since its beginning.

noah thirteen wrote:Essential Tomb Of Dracula TPB. Awesome stories, great art, 25 issues of a book, shame about the lack of colour, but I can live with that. 9/10. All I read is horror comics from the 50's-70's and these were great to get in an affordable collection.
Was it one of those giant Showcase books? I have a couple of those.

Ultimate Iron Man was pretty awesome. I'm pretty sure what upset people was Card going off the wall and basically re-writing Ender's Game instead of using anything that would have seemed congruous with the established Ultimate Iron Man character. The whole "I am a giant brain" thing was kind of strange. Very cool story though, I like insane nonsense.

Man, I need to pick up Lone Wolf & Cub again. I'm only four volumes away from finishing, but I have vols. 23 and 25, and the shops never have 24. And then I'll have to start buying Samurai Executioner.

Last comic I read was Issue 5/6 of Hellboy: Darkness Calls. Good storyline so far, lots of integration of Russian folklore, but I worry for issue 6. Either they're going to introduce some new character who will stick around and complicate storylines in the future (I hope), or the ultimate baddie is going to show up and get defeated in one issue, which I hate. I'll give it a 7/10.

Right now I am borrowing all the Preacher and Ys that I haven't yet read. I buy the Walking Dead hardcovers as they come out. I also read a comic version of I Am Legend recently. Pretty much I have a friend who's lending me all the comics I could ever dream of.. and I am loving it.

First 4 issues of the Invisibles, a few months ago. It's like the third time I've tried to read it. Why can't I get into this series? 3/10.

Yeah.. I also have volumes 1-5 of Lone Wolf. I feel weird knowing I have 20 more to buy though. I don't know where to put them on my shelves... maybe stacking them will be more space efficient! Plus at 10$ a pop, that's another 200$ I need to spend. Fuck...

Also curious about Samurai Executioner and.. shit, I can't remember the name of the other one now.

I tried the same thing... I dunno, 10 years ago? I hated it. I like practically all of Grant Morrison's stuff, and I hold Arkham Asylum in higher regard than a blowjob from some ancient fertility goddess, but Invisibles? Meh. Maybe I should try to find a torrent and give it another chance.

each book has a very different tone- there were definately some parts i had to struggle through- but its worth it for the overall story arch.

Yes, I hope this is the beginning of a trend towards more comic threads.

Green Lantern #13

I'm working my way through all the back issues of GL from "Rebirth" up to now. I'd never really read too much of the character before, but I'm getting way into it. I've been loving Johns' run, although I think the whole "One Year Later" thing (which was pretty dumb to begin with) kind of threw a wrench in the gears: all of a sudden Hal's a POW in Chechnya getting hassled by Black Adam's goons, etc. WTF? I liked it more when he was just hanging out in Coast City by himself tangling with the Shark and Black Hand. But I'm digging this run a whole lot nonetheless. Can't wait to get into Green Lantern Corps.

7.5/10

The last thing I read before that was Ed Brubaker's The Authority: Revolution, which was fucking rad and I think possibly my favorite Authority material, even over Millar and Ellis' runs (which are also amazing). Jenny Quantum FTW. 9/10.

I love The Invisibles and Animal Man, but I had my Grant Morrison "just couldn't get into it" moment too, as I think everyone does sooner or later with his work. I gave up on his New X-Men run about halfway through. I think a big part of it was the TERRIBLE fucking artist that took over when Quitely took a break (he seems to take a lot of breaks), but I dunno, something about his take on the X-Men irritated me. I still want to finish it someday. But Invisibles, Animal Man, etc. = gold.

I dug out the comics last week and I'm working my way thru this killer series again. After that, Drunken Fist.

24 Seven Vol. 2
A collection of short stories from various artists, from well know dudes like Ashley Wood and Ben Templesmith to complete unknown. It's from Image and as usual with these kind of collection it's a mixed bag of good, greats and whatevers but there are some great moments and overall the common theme (robot) is interesting and well done on the visual side of things. I might pick up the first volume in the near future since there are actually more artists that I am interested in the first one. Still, a cover by Ashley Wood is enough to get me interested and the stories well cool enough to never give a reason to regret spending money on this volume.

I was pretty disappointed with the first one, so I didn't bother. I find the concept behind the stories extremely interesting, but the vast majority of them just didn't explore any of it. There was some good stuff in there, but in almost all cases, you could've replaced the robots with humans and it wouldn't have made a difference. Seems pointless to me.

Anyway, I just finished the Bullet Points TPB yesterday, and I'll give it 8/10.

It's a great idea - the scientist who invented the super-soldier serum is assassinated before he can deliver it, so Steve Rogers never becomes Captain America, and the ripple effects of the assassination change the entire Marvel universe. JMS makes it very clear that his point is that the taking of a single life can have such far-reaching effects... maybe a bit too clear. Some of it comes across as a bit contrived as a result. Plus, as cool as the basic concept is, it's also one of those self-referential things that only ubergeeks will really "get" - if you're not familiar with the continuity that this story deviates from, it doesn't work for you.

I've just found out this book is done by the singer of My Chemical Romance but honestly it doesn't make it less good in my eyes. Yes, it's that good.
Their are two things that makes it an instant classic in my eyes and that will make or break this book for anyone :
the name of the story is "The day the Eifell tower went berserk".
And one of the character is "Robot zombie Gustave Eiffel".
Excellent stuff all around drawn by Gabriel Ba, who also does the mighty Casanova.

While not the last comic I read, issue 12 of Loveless was pretty damn awesome. One of the best single issues of a mainstream comic I've read in a long time. Total DEPRESS!!!
