How much debt do you have?

$74,000 on mortgage @ $658/mo
$7,100 in Federal student loans @ $250/mo

So, about $81,100. No other debts or obligations. I have a credit card for emergencies, but it has never had a balance. Actually, it's never even been used.

I guess it makes a difference to save up for purchases instead of taking the route of instant gratification via credit card. I plan to either apply the $250 month extra (after the student loan is paid off) to either principal on the mortgage, or sticking it away in savings.

I'd like to state that the problem I had that really slowed down my savings was subsidized state loans for college and State Farm insurance suing me for $4100, relating to a car accident.
