well, one thing gaga has in common with all previously mentioned pop icons(except madonna) that these two girls do not is that she writes and performs a good majority of her music. keep in mind she was a songwriter for other pop artists before she started her own performing career.

On that level, I don't think she's a very good song writer though. Whoever wrote "Poison" for instance, did a better job then the Gaga hits I've heard.

still, to gaga's merit she's a strong presence in what makes her who she is as an artist, whereas aguilera and spears are simply tits and ass that can sing. most of her hit songs were hits because they were catchy, well written pop tunes. maybe nothing groundbreaking, but her popularity isn't based purely upon her image alone.

To make this point I'll add that Spears song "Poison" is pretty awesome, in my opinion, and if Gaga had performed it with an edgy video it would have been even more popular than it was.

OK, well you're wrong and by now I may have to just give up. I've already been over this stuff WITH YOU IN THIS THREAD but anyway it's noteworthy that while the other two don't, Gaga does:
- almost exclusively sing live
- write a much bigger chunk of her music
- possess non-voice musical talent (can play piano well)
- go out of her way to address social issues at all

I know you'll probably suggest that speaking out against DADT and making a vid for It Gets Better is "simply good marketing" but I guess I'm not that cynical

You're always going to like Bowie better than her because you like rock and he's got that much more rock in his music. Of course I like her songs, man. Not all of them, but I don't even like all the songs from my most-favorite bands. It's Madonna-level pop to my ears. That's really good! Putting out the number of listenable singles in a row that she did is not easy, especially if she has/had some hand in the writing (which I believe she does). Yeah Britney/xtina had good runs but they are label puppets to a greater extent.

And she got put into historical context not instantly, but mostly after Bad Romance, because it's probably the best pop song of the last decade or whatever.
