I feel like it's also worth noting that all the stupid DLC in the world is still infinitely less mercenary than the ruthless, quarter-sucking behavior of so many "classic" arcade games from the Age When Games Were Pure and Untainted By Commercialism.

Playing through most older games with cheats and memory editors just to see the final levels, bosses, stages etc - it often winds up feelnig like a completely unfinished project, as though the scheme was just to get you to buy the game based on the cover art and possibly the first stage... and after that, fuck you.

Fester's Quest for the NES begins as an Addams Family themed game and after a certain point just shifts into 100% Japanese tentacle monster insanity... as though only the initial facade of the game really mattered at all.

What games are like nowadays

I basically agree with all of this. I guess it's just the contrarian in me coming out when I see all these self-righteous internet nerds dogpiling on a game that I think looks cool and deserves their dollarsbux. As awful as day-one DLC is, I have a much bigger problem with the basic bland shittiness of most AAA games, and I hate the idea of a game like Metro failing at retail and being dismissed in favor of more Assassin's Creed (really can't articulate how much or exactly why I hate Assassin's Creed).

I think games right now are basically where Hollywood was in the '80s: the high-concept blockbuster formula dominates (Call of Duty = Top Gun), but there are a lot of interesting things happening in the independent world, which are gradually having more and more sway over the market (Minecraft = sex lies and videotape).

not that anyone here really is into Japanese shooters, but i've been steadily building up my Saturn collection over the past year.. two new ones today, with Thunderforce Gold Pack 2 on the way.. prices on a lot of these have almost doubled over the past few years, so i'm trying to be patient in scoring some of the rest of the rare ones. Still can't find a reasonable Batsugun, but at least I did find Battle Garegga for a decent price.

Sony claims to be the indie developers best friend right now as they're getting everyone on board for the ps4, I've read. But I think this smacks of American Idol-ism, where they're going to make it seem an honor to "try out" for them and as soon as one of these indie games that they'll probably pay very little for hits, they're exploit the fuck out of it and maybe run it into the ground like with what happened to Dead Space. Obviously not saying Dead Space was an "indie" game when it started, but it was at least a niche game that got totally raped by huge budgets and focus groups by the third installment and now, despite selling millions, we've basically been told it wasn't successful enough to warrant another one. Which I suppose is fine-- I didn't want another DS3. But the fist two games were great and it was only greed that killed the series.

I'm a total Sony fanboy, but I'm with you on this. I hate the idea that indie "content creators" (can't type that without scare quotes and still respect myself) of any kind NEED big conglomerate publishers, which is less true than ever right now and has long been basically discredited as a concept by the DIY music culture to which this board is distantly related.

One of the most bummer video game stories in recent years to me was the story of Streets of Rage Remake--not the canceled 3D game (also a bummer) but the unbelievably loving and detailed, fan-made, from-scratch re-imagining of the 16-bit games. As I understand it, they went far out of their way to inform Sega about what they were doing, and it was only days after the final version was made available for download that Sega told them to cease and desist.

It's just so backwards: these guys basically put in eight years of work making the best free advertisement imaginable for a dormant franchise that hasn't yet been rebooted, and rather than seizing the opportunity (publishing the game, promoting a new reboot, boxing kangaroo action figures, whatever) they just scuttled the whole thing and put out another fucking shitty Sonic game that I'm sure failed to meet their expectations of finally at long last returning that doddering, syphilis-ridden franchise to its glory days...

Final Fight 3 is maybe better than Streets of Rage 2...maybe. It's a legit classic.

FF 1 and 2 are definitely inferior to any of the SoR games.

guess it depends on what versions of FF you're talking about... kinda hard to compare FF (Arcade) to SoR (Gen/Mega Drive) since those were never on arcade hardware to being with.

Don't care. It's $5 and it isn't story related content at all and the publisher rejected anything like that. While it kind of sucks, it's so far from the worst of these and surely won't be the last. I always find it funny when people who get games for free are all up in arms over $5.

I already pre-ordered the game for almost half of what the 360/PS3 version costs.

I can say for sure that Final Fight 3 is better than Streets of Rage 2. I love both but FF is just more fun. Better graphics, better sound, better characters, better everything.
