Fuck modern intertextuality.

I know there have been periods before, where artists said that "everything has been done" etc. but that cover not only panders to that sentiment, it is basically creative bankruptcy.

It reminds me of self-described "music nuts" who take classes like "History of Rock" and get pissed when the professor talks about anything other than the Beatles and Stones.

well, not sure if this guy is best categorized as one of her fans...

OK, fine, I still stand by the fact I find people intellectualizing her way more than they should as a general trend sort of thing.

I think that's a young shaver and all rock icons thing... wanting to know, "What does Joe Strummer think?" "What does Roger Daltry think?" "what does the-guy-from emperor think?" "what does Karl from Nile think?"

not really limited to ladygags
SPOILERSPOILER_SHOW
that said, I still am curious of "what does Lemmy think?" on most issues

and I'm saying that behavior is induced by Koons doing the cover more than by Gaga

If I remember right, the only pop musician you've cited as noteworthy is Tom Waits. So... who is your #1 important post-2000 pop musician? Post-1990? Starting after these years, not active after.

cmon Mr cubes, answer his question... it's a loaded question asked in a flip way, but methinks your list of stuffs with artistic merit, in your opinion probably would be the most interesting read of the day... and spur some verbal jousting and stuff.

in other words, more interesting than wearing shoes and smoking 20 years ago.

It's more of your latter post; I was responding to this:
Pisscubes wrote:the bullshit that she's actually some important artist
Basically, if she's not an important figure in pop music, who is? Maybe she's just an important performer, heheh.

I definitely thought it was cool when she performed this song (below) on national TV... if you actually think performing a song that is far from a traditional pop composition is just a marketing tactic that will help sell more records and concert tickets because people are buying WEIRDNESS (not buying music they enjoy), that's fine, but I think this speaks to her being interested in actually moving outside of the traditional pop boundaries as opposed to just doing whatever will get her attention and more $$$

I'm not sure if it comes across in this performance, but that song really stands out on the album as an oddity that will never be performed. and she's doing it here not as a middle-finger or a prank or a stunt, but really giving her all ... and this is in 2010 at a pretty crucial point in her career where she's on the brink of mega stardom - she did Bad Romance on that same appearance, and certainly could have done one of her other big singles to help cement her as a "person with a lot of hit songs" but chose not to.

Pisscubes wrote:I certainly think she's a pop artist with some technical musical gifts-- again, you won't find me pissing on her voice in this day and age of auto-tune. but I don't think she's MUSICALLY important, the pop art aside. So maybe we're saying the same thing.
OK, that's fair. Finally!

i know i don't really have a leg to stand on in the pop music debate but none of these songs are doing it for me.
if there's anybody in the world who'd be fucking unobservant enough to actually damage themselves with trap-soap I guess it'd be the guy with dialup in 2007

Maybe you just aren't cut out for High Art... 8)

The R. Kelly song might be one of the best. I think the good/dud ratio is really solid. The first 4 tracks or whatever have a nice conceptual flow to them. It's definitely the best & most interesting album of hers, vocally.
