Mandalorian is light on mythology but does world building, which is nice. The Empire covered a whole ass galaxy and we kept getting movies about the same three dipshits, occasionally on different planets.

On that note, I finally watched Solo, which was fine to the extent it did what Mandalorian does really well: flesh out that whole-ass galaxy the Empire struck back over with a blend of new things contextualized by—without necessarily being about—old things. (I literally forgot about the Darth Maul cameo until just now, which I hate so goddamn much.)

If the main "villain" had been revealed to be literally anyone else, I would LOVE Solo. I don't watch the animated shows or read the books so the whole "actually Maul is ALIVE" thing is just dumb to me. But I would have loved to see the Solo sequels just to see where that was going. It would have been a really fine line to walk to get the Solo from the end of the movie into jaded ANH Solo, especially with two more movies in between. But I liked the characters they introduced and would've liked seeing more of them, and young Lando was well done.

The only episode I haven't enjoyed in this season of The Mandalorian is the one that was directed by Carl Weathers. It felt like lame 80s television action and dialog. Doesn't help that Gina Carano can't act to save her life. But in general, in order for me to enjoy Star Wars, I have to keep my expectations extremely low. It's worked with every Star Wars Disney flick/show with the exception of Rise of Skywalker which was distractingly awful. Fuck JJ Abrams forever. Also fuck Ron Howard... but that's just in general.

Carano was really great in her first episode in Season 1 but since then she has been dogshit. I enjoyed that Weathers-directed episode mainly for Horatio Sanz as the blue fish guy and Welliver and Esposito working together but the rest of it just felt like action filler. I agree with Fuck Ron Howard but his daughter's episodes of Mandalorian have been the best directed, and she was the only one who got a good performance out of Carano in S1.

I can agree with that. But something rubs me the wrong way about Bryce Dallas Howard after watching season 1's bonus features. Like the other directors earned their stripes before they got the job, but she's in because of nepotism. That said, the episodes she has worked on have been good, so ultimately what's the big deal, anyway. And I'm glad that Carl Weathers got to direct an episode, even if it ended up a bit sub par. The season has been pretty consistent, and I appreciate that.

Jesus. Mandalorian just telling the new sequels to fuck off and going back into the old expanded universe. Dark Forces even.

And..... Mandalorian just canceled any need ever to watch those stupid sequels ever if you want more Star Wars type waiz after the real 3. Rey Cunts and Cuntlo Ren are now cunts to the wind. Will also watch the Book of (spoilers) next year. Not much faith in those other series, though.

Since we're apparently avoiding spoilers for the moment, I will just say this - Season 2 was actually better than the first, which is a very pleasant surprise, but I can't say I cared much for what happened at the end there.

I feel like the end of S2 needed a sop along those lines to make the transition to S3 more palatable for that kind of fan—but yeah I agree with the ending being not the greatest

I finally watched the mini-doc on how they film in the Volume, and it is technically impressive as hell—and it made me wonder: how much better would the prequels have been if the state of the art had been more along the lines of the Volume? The performances might not have been as wooden and sterile, as the actors would have been engaging with almost a complete rendition of the world around them; the in-scene cinematography wouldn't have been so pat and formulaic, as there would have been actual dimension to fill without the technical hellscape of chromakey staging. For all his shortcomings as a writer, I assume that Lucas wrote the prequels in contemplation of the limits of the technology, which is why in the Phantom Menace you ended up with an all-CGI battle scenes of robots vs. Rasta Nabbits while the humans skulked around a Cheesecake Factory.

The stupid sequels worked visually for that exact reason, I think.
Mostly anyway.... everything that needs to be said about the stupid casino has been said.

Aside from the space squids on the Falcon, I thought Force Awakens looked fucking great.

Kuntlo Ren might have murdered Grogu though, so maybe he's not a kunt after all... (I mean, assuming Grogu was still in the temple by the time Ben was of age to break off from the Jedi and murder everyone he could)

You're absolutely right about Lucas. He thought "I can literally make ANYTHING happen with CGI!" without really caring or realizing that it would all look horribly dated within 5 years of release. The CGI characters don't look THAT bad but it's the environments that just look SO fake. And he went so overboard on filling the screen with so much shit every single frame, the space battles all look god-awful because it just looks like a fucking video game with quick shots to people's faces thrown in. And he also didn't seem to care that having most of his actors play against fucking tennis balls and green screens would not be inspiring to their performances whatsoever.

The visual busyness also depopulates the world of anything spiritually or mythologically significant.
Millions of lightsabers flying in circles definitely looked cool when you first saw it, but the reason the force and Jedi resonated with people so much is because it seemed rare, hidden, mystical and hard-sought-for. Luke's lightsaber was something that people had stopped thinking about, and it was incredibly powerful only once someone dusted it off... the Jedi and Force-users don't work whatsoever once you have millions of them.

The prequels focused on the Jedi so they seemed outsized—but it was still small numbers considering the alleged scope of the film. Even so, the way they were used was just bad storytelling: even if Chekhov's gun is primarily about parsimony in storytelling, it's also instructive on creating dramatic tension. Lucas showed the gun in the opening crawl, had it shoot 3 seconds later, and didn't let it stop shooting until the end credits.

I don't like that I'm mad about the prequels like 25 years later but here we are.

season 2 was great.
like a fucking RPG "I'll do as you ask, but only if you complete this quest...", but still great.
The first season was similar, but I felt like it wasn't as enjoyable, until the last episode that started with the stormtrooper banter.

Needs more Bill Burr.

No! No more talk of Abrams/Johnson’s insults and abominations. They can join the Crystal Skull as a bad dream that left me with a mental scar, but I know life isn’t that lame to allow such a thing to have happened.

In terms of opening crawls, I think Rise of Skywalker's is even worse than Phantom Menace's, and that's saying something. PALPATINE LIVES! Fuck off

guess i'll put this here:

Less than 24 hours after her explosive ouster from Star Wars series The Mandalorian for incendiary social media posts, Gina Carano has hit back at her detractors and revealed a new movie project she is making with conservative website The Daily Wire.

Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views
betting she also thinks THEY LIVE is about how jews control everything
