Some Kind of Monster seemed like an attempt to explain St. Anger.
I've waited for years for them to make something which explains Some Kind of Monster.

From an empirical viewpoint, the problem with Free Will (and causality) is reconciling determinism and freedom to make sense of morality.

to its credit its nothing like how it was advertised. it's much weirder and more thoughtful than a high production viking'd conan movie
more like hamlet meets valhalla rising with just stupidly flawless production

“The Rift” B-horror/creature flick with an underwater theme involving gene splicing. This is a shitty low budget version of “Leviathan” (1989). I don’t recognize any of the cast other than Lee Ermey and Ray Wise.

Re: Latest movie you watched (1-10 scale)
Ambulance ('22) 7/10 - Michael Bay lost me a while ago... I watched one of the Transformer flicks and bailed. This, while also very stupid, feels more like his earlier action flicks, but this time with drone shots.
Extreme Predjudice ('89) 7/10 - Bordertown Ranger Nick Nolte takes on a former pal turned Mexican drug kingpin Powers Boothe. Throw in Michael Ironside, Rip Torn, Maria Conchita-Alonzo, Clancy Brown and William Forsythe, and you have a solid Peckinpah-ish neo-Western.
Dual ('22) 6.5/10 - Another slow-burn black comedy from Riley Sterns. If you liked Faults or The Art of Self Defense, then you'll probably enjoy this.
Alligator ('80) 7.5/10 - For an early 80's Jaws-like cash-in, this holds up way better than I had expected. Robert Forster is great and there's plenty of familiar faces from genre flicks of the era.
Death Promise ('77) 7.5/10 - Low budget NYC landlord revenge flick during the Bruce Lee kung fu craze. Highly entertaining.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ('22) 3/10 - Gotta go fast (and die)
Uncharted ('22) 3/10 - The games are better and they don't have Mark Wahlberg
Everything Everywhere All At Once ('22) 8/10 - Apparently this was written with Jackie Chan in mind -- but when he wouldn't sign on, it was re-written for Michelle Yeoh, and I think it's probably better for it. It's not often that a movie will keep me guessing.
I also bought the Werner Herzog Star Wars figure... so now I want a Cronenberg Star Trek figure. Or at least some Kinski figure or something.

even if you see the first one (which is a mandatory pre-watch IMO) and think it sucks, this sequel is an absolute masterpieceEight Bit Alien wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 10:15 pmI guess I gotta finally watch the original, people seem so excited about this new one.
it’s insanely earnest and timeless - it’s getting a bit of a boost because it’s doing storytelling that has been deemed “boring” for the last couple of decades… but this movie reminds you why and how that classic narrative thing just WORKS.
this is so embarrassing to talk about… feels like fury road again (apples/oranges but each is its own special thing)
it is criminal that this horseshit new jurassic world is forcing TG:M out of IMAX theaters

Money Crazy (HK 1977) - 7/10
Pretty entertaining HK comedy starring Richard Ng and Ricky Hui. Wouldn't have watched it if it wasn't directed by John Woo. Was described in a review as a cross between Ocean's Eleven and The Naked Gun, which isn't too far off IMO. Many ok to hilarious gags, and plenty of old school kung fu action.

Fuck, that's right! Nolte even gets a jab in about Tiny's eye. I haven't seen RotN in decades, so I didn't recognize Lamar.cxwx wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 11:15 pmYou forgot Tiny Lister and motherfuckin Lamar from Revenge Of The Nerds.
