It’s fuckin awesome.

I saw him at the garden when he was working on a lot of this material. Because of covid there was plexiglass directly in front of seats on top of the seats in front of you. I must have hit my fucking head on that damn thing at least a dozen times from keeling over.

A Chinese Ghost Story - 8/10
Hadn't seen this in almost 30 years and was surised to see it holds up very well. It's got a simple but effective plot, great casting (Leslie Cheung is just perfect as the bumbling, mostly useless tax collector), cool special effects, great fights, great flow, it's a total classic.

Part II - 6/10
None of the plot or the way most characters act in this film makes any fucking sense whatsoever. Some good, some mediocre special effects, some cool fights, but it lacks the freshness or originality of part one and is just a giant mess of a film. On its own terms, it's a decent, wacky film, suffering from the typical problems HK films from that era often suffer from (lack of cohesion for example), but still, it wouldn't be so disappointing if it wasn't the sequel to a fantastic film.

I've never heard of it and you're score doesn't inspire confidence but after reading that horror in the high desert was filmed in the Mojave desert, where I grew up, I definitely have to watch this

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai ('99) - 7.5/10 - I don't think RZA's soundtrack holds up well at all. It's serviceable at best. Otherwise, it's better than I gave it credit for previously.

The Artifice Girl ('22) 7/10 - Low budget, tiny cast, only three locations (I think), and I have to guess it was filmed during the COVID lockdown. It relies completely on dialog to convey the drama, and does so pretty well, IMO. The plot revolves around AI being used to catch child predators, as well as how to manage AI sentience. I enjoyed this, but you have to be in the mood for a "heady" / "nothing happens" type of movie - and be ready to get one of your last looks at Lance Henricksen in a modern role - he's not long for this world.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods ('23) - 3/10 - I found this to be embarrassingly bad. Any charm that made the first Shazam work is completely absent here. Zach Levi seems to be doing a Jimmy Fallon impression, and guess what? It fucking sucks worse than you would imagine. There may have been a few entertaining moments here and there, but not worth watching, overall. I can usually tolerate things that I understand aren't made for me, like most superhero flicks, but not this time.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves ('23) - 8/10 - This is pretty much the opposite side of the coin to Shazam! - as it pulls off off enough charm that the flaws were easily overlooked. Plenty of fan service/easter eggs for D&D stans (whether it's pen & paper, cartoon, or video games), but does so without shoving it in your face. As an action/comedy flick, this somehow worked really well. I'd still recommend approaching with skepticism, but it's worth a watch.

Ghost Dog is one of the most "cool movie that sucks" movies ever. I remember it fondly but I've never really enjoyed it.

Just saw this came out in 1999. My memory of watching it was at my grandparents but they both died before 1995. My memory has become Swiss cheese. Stupid Ghost Dog.

Saw Spiral 5/10
Chris Rock's acting sucks. Every cop film clichée ever. Poor pacing. Not even particularly bloody or inventive traps to make up for everything, but a couple of very nicely done gore effects.

Operation Wildgeese 7.5/10
Advertised by my film mate as one of the best merc films ever, and it did deliver on all fronts except bullet holes. Not a single bullet hole in the entire film, WTF.

Dirty Harry 4 - 8/10
Great shit + a great many bullet holes. I don't need to point out here that Clint Eastwood is the coolest motherfucker ever. Bordered on exploitation territory a couple of times, it has quite a bit of rapey sleazy behaviour in it plus plenty of Callahan punching dirtbags. Need to watch the other four films in the serious pronto!

Also, rewatched Hereditary with the wife recently. 9/10 easily. Toni Collette is awesome, hadn't known her before seeing Hereditary, now I watch everything with her in it, no matter how stupid it looks. Film has so many interesting themes in it; it's always a good sign when you talk about a film for longer than the film itself lasted. Not a fan of the ableism in Ari Aster's films, though. Really looking forward to seeing Beau is afraid.
