Holy shit at that farmers by nature record. I Haven't heard disc 2 yet, but disc 1 is better than the first two records...

Yeah, it's a bit of a stunner. Have you heard the Icepick (Corsano/Wooley/Hakker-Flaten) record yet? I really, really like it, although every time I've listened to it I've been quite stoned. I wish Corsano would play more with people who aren't Paul Flaherty.

haven't heard it, but I'm also a corsano fan. I really feel like that dude is discriminated against a bit because he's a noise guy, isn't studied, etc...I've heard some folks around here get snooty about his playing, and I can't imagine why. I think he's a terrific player. that record he did with evan parker and john edwards, a glancing blow, is very, very good.

Corsano is an engaging drummer. I'm not surprised that he's snubbed like an outsider, though.

It could only be because he plays so frequently with "non-jazz" artists -- and people like Flaherty and Joe McPhee, who aren't really known for swinging -- and is considered by snobs as an interloper. I saw him with Yosuke Yamashita and Akira Sakata a couple times and he was brilliant. I actually prefer him in jazz contexts because his playing's so different from that of most free jazz drummers, and completely different from usual suspects like Nilssen-Love or Tim Daisy.

Whoa. I was sold on that before the piano even came in. I've never listened to any Andrew Hill before. Looks like that'll be this weekend's project.
More Corsano/Wooley stuff, this time with Dave Rempis (one of my long-time faves; his solos are always searing) and Pascal Niggenkemper. Not sure yet if it's better than the Icepick record I mentioned not too long ago, but it's definitely better recorded.

I'm definitely digging that. I missed some friends playing with pascal niggenkemper the other night, actually- still pretty bummed.
re: andrew hill, the place to start is probably point of departure. it came out the same year as out to lunch and shares half a band with that record (dolphy, tony williams, and richard davis), as well as joe henderson and kenny dorham. so, outrageous lineup. pretty perfect record.

Sweet. On it.
Been giving Julius Hemphill a go this weekend. Not sure if I can see what all the fuss is about.

dogon a.d.? that's the only one I've heard, but I really like that record. mostly just the title track, really.
just had an amazing experience walking home in the snow through a forest at 5 am listening to this:
I love the way he picks. even when he's playing the pretty, recognizable bits of the heads he's just kind of limply dragging the pick across the strings, and the resulting mechanical string noise sounds entirely separate from the chord tones. this record is so bizarre and gorgeous

been on a big tim dahl kick recently, made more intense after seeing child abuse perform a couple of nights ago...stumbled across this today:
WAY into it
also heard this (apparent) classic for the first time at that child abuse show, as weasel walter was DJing

Man how could I have missed this thread the entire time? Looking forward to checking out all the recommendations, in the meantime I'll leave this here:
my favourite pianist Walter Norris + George Mraz on the bass.

I did not see this thread either, wow. Most of my jazz knowledge is from the 60's and 70's, and not all that extensive, tbh. This is a more recently discovered favorite:
