I don't understand why people keep trying to add new creatures to these movies. You've already got the best movie monster of all time, anything new you try to come up with is just going to suck by comparison, and this is no exception.

I thought the movie was fine up until that point, except for the obvious stuff that probably nobody liked, but once the lank-o-morph appeared, it turned into unintentional comedy. And I'm saying this knowing full well I'm talking about a movie where an autistic robot starts speaking with a British accent when his firmware gets upgraded to smartypants.

feel like the only way through all of this now is to retvrn to the psychotically horny everything-being-penetrated-by-everything-else nightmare vision on the early giger work that never even quite made it into the first movie

i thought giant skinny freak was kinda cool though

Well, it's a Disney franchise now, so as far as I'm concerned we can count our lucky stars that this has a woman giving birth to a Xenomorph cocoon in it, even if the dumbest thing about the movie comes out of the cocoon. And let's face it, everyone loves Aliens, but that movie already chickened out as far as the "everything is somehow a penis and a vagina at the same time" theme goes, and they never got it back. These days I'm just happy to see people running down claustrophobic hallways with smoke and hazard stripes everywhere.

Although, say about Resurrection what you will, at least that movie had the balls to be fucking weird as shit.

as soon as i realized the big baby was supposed to represent mark zuckerberg, it all came together

even when you feel like there’s some totally novel/foreign threat to your well-being, turns out it’s still just some pernicious 1% forces fucking you over.

Yeah I was gonna say, I remember being mightily impressed when I watched it at the cinema by the creature designs and the weird shit Brad Dourif does. If it weren't for the at times overly comicy (in a bad way) script (those stupid space mercenaries... and particulary Ron Perlman's character. makes me angry just thinking of him and his dumb oneliners) it would be an absolute classic. The way it is it's still the last Alien film worth a damn.

edit: Also, Winona Ryder is a shitty actress and I wish she wasn't in the film. She makes me cringe in every scene she's in in every movie she turns up in, and I have no idea how she could become one of the biggest stars of the 90s.

I thought it looked like the Engineers, and that immediately pissed me off because I will never let go of my hatred for Prometheus.

Joss Whedon wrote the script and was apparently displeased because they didn't perform it like a Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode.

I actually hated Resurrection when it first came out for how overtly goofy it was, but there's been so much terrible Alien-adjacent stuff since that it really does feel more like the last of the... let's say acceptable ones. At least it had a vision, as misguided as it might have been.

All the elements that are typical for a Whedon script (the godsamn qipping for example) suck shit. So which parts don't you like/ would you change?

Eeh, I don't really remember enough about it to be able to nitpick it that way, but absolutely everything about Clone Ripley was dumb. It's bad enough that they decided to bring her back in the first place when the one great thing about Alien 3 was that it ended her story in a way that made sense, but even if you take that out of the equation, the character just didn't make sense. Her motivations seemed to change every 10 minutes, and not because she was somehow conflicted, just because the movie couldn't make up its mind about her.

I liked that they made it look like she wasn't one of the good guys anymore, but I totally agree with you re: her motivations. I remember being pretty confused about this when I watched it. I also just remembered the swimming aliens, which were badly done CGI, to make matters worse. I'm starting to think I see this film in rose-colured glasses...
On the other hand, you've got all that creepy interactions with the Alien queen and her son or whatever that clone thing was and the wonderful scene with her failed clones - the film does have many cool things going for it. I guess if they had just given Jean Pierre Jeunet free reign, it could have been a real banger...
