That's cool. Let us know if you spend less than a year reading them.

I finally got off my ass and read the last few stories in the Library Of America collection of H.P. Lovecraft stories. 10/10 It had a story or two that felt like he was just following a formula, but overall I loved it.

I started On the Road by Kerouac. It's making me realize I need to finish my sentences with Wow! or Man! or Phew! or Whooee!

reading a stephenson novel for the characters is like reading the encyclopedia for the narrative: you're the one doing it wrong here, not the book.

Worst R.A. Salvatore and worst Drizzt book ever. Hopefully The Ghost King will be better.

Pynchon - Gravity's Rainbow fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck/10

Same as any Pynchon - when it's lucid and straight it's as poignant, funny, brutal and sensitive as anything I've read. The rest of the time it's like one of the rockets in the book landing just inside my forehead. It's devastating, but for me the cerebral devastation takes a little away from the emotional devastation.

I've said this before, but I'm done with Pynchon. In the time it took me to read GR, I could have read four or five other books and probably gotten more out of each of them.

polished off The Stand. Typical lackluster climax but an enjoyable read. Meandering through a dozen or so pages of the wheel of time before bed every night. First pass, first book. It kind of takes the edge off my dnd cravings.

Julian Barnes - Staring At the Sun

Barnes' last book was great, but this one's horrendously boring. I guess a recurring theme with Barnes is average/dull people wrestling with spiritual/existential problems that they know are beyond them, but SATS just comes across as sub-Paulo Cuehlo philosophical dreck for dumb old ladies. Gee, what does happen after we die? Beats me, but I couldn't wait for the characters to die so they could find out. 3/10

Me either. I think people just really badly want a genius writer to happen on us, and they tried to make him fit the bill, since he has a mythology built in (recluse thing). He has some funny writing. But it's hollow and inconsequential, especially now. He was hyped 30 years ago. But his work does not hold up. Just my opinion...Pynchon devotees don't hate on me!

Blood Meridian - fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffuuuuuuck.

I don't know why I didn't read this until now. I've had the book for something like 6 years. It used to be the surface I'd rail pills off of... little did I know what was inside would blow my mind even more.
