Re: Latest movie you watched (1-10 scale)
The fact that voicing Unicron in the Transformers movie was the last thing Orson Welles did before he died is truly one of the great tragedies of the 20th century. I mean, just when the guy finally gets a shot at the big leagues, after a lifetime of toiling away in obscurity.
Speaking of cosmic justice, I watched Noah yesterday, and man, what a profoundly silly movie this is. I'm usually a fan of Aronofsky and his overly melodramatic "why can't damaged man just stop being self destructive" shtick, but he really needs to stay away from the philosophical/supernatural stuff. It's why The Fountain didn't work, and this one isn't much better. I was totally willing to buy into Noah as an abusive patriarch, but you can't resolve that with him just going, oh, I think I'll kiss the baby instead, and then he gets drunk on a beach for I guess like a month because he's disappointed God or some shit. Also, yes, yes, veganism, we get it. I guess at least the movie pissed off the Christians because of its "inaccuracies".

Gunpowder Milkshake and Kate are essentially the same movie, the stories have only slight differences...boring and predictable half-assed Jane Wick fodder. 3/3

Re: Latest movie you watched (1-10 scale)
shadow of the vampire 7/10 i'd heard this recommended over the years but only for imprecise reasons. that all now makes sense - this is a truly distinct movie and I love it for all the creativity at the ground level. I watched it with friends and we were wildly amused by the camp of the first 90%, but that final scene completely worked (for me) and I can't think of another movie that pulled off a tonal shift so successfully, so close to the end. martyrs, maybe? from dusk 'till dawn comes to mind, but that has a very different trajectory.
before (or maybe during?) a second watch, it clicked that - like almost all of his movies - the entire story hinges on the psychological state of the main character(s), and in this case it's noah. the movie works for me if I focus exclusively on noah's decision making. he's getting these extremely hazy messages, and is trying to figure out what to do about it. the core question is whether the human race should live or die, and he ultimately gets to decide.
it's a super weird movie and I almost never recommend it to people, but for me it's so interesting seeing a pre-history setting treated as more "sci-fi / fantasy" than "sword & sandals" and that's easily the best thing about it IMO. closest thing that comes to mind is this short story, which is stellar.
the rock guys move at a different frame rate than the rest of the movie, which is beyond cool. even without the harryhousen legacy/nod, it would still impart the otherwordly vibe in a nearly subliminal way. i guess the spiderverse movies do something similar: distinct frame rates for different elements: "...Miles at 12 frames per second while all the other Spider-people are animated at 24 frames per second, to show how Miles is out of step and still learning to catch up with the best"
I really didn't like it after the first time I saw it, and it's because it presents itself as a typical action epic where you're supposed to root for one faction vs the other, so it put me into that headspacespacehamster wrote: ↑Sun Dec 22, 2024 3:25 amSpeaking of cosmic justice, I watched Noah yesterday, and man, what a profoundly silly movie this is. I got that, I just thought it was dumb. It's the fifty billionth interation of the "is the human race worth saving" trope, only this time it's not, I dunno, aliens or whatever, but Aronofsky's typical driven/tortured/self-destructive protagonist who's willing to sacrifice everything he cares about for art/wrestling/ballet/the will of the creator. And the way it's ultimately resolved is just too hokey for me.Necrometer wrote: ↑Sun Dec 22, 2024 9:52 am the movie works for me if I focus exclusively on noah's decision making. he's getting these extremely hazy messages, and is trying to figure out what to do about it. the core question is whether the human race should live or die, and he ultimately gets to decide.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ('24 | 105min) - 5/10 - The writing felt really lazy, which sucks because the practical effects and performances were better than you'd expect from something like this. Everything that happened felt like it was the most convenient way to provide motivations or solutions and was distracting. It met my expectations and could have been worse, I guess.
Deadpool & Wolverine ('24 | 128min) - 6/10 - Entertaining despite Ryan Reynolds. It has it's moments, but suffers from the Disney/Marvel overproduced sheen. It met my expectations and could have been worse, I guess.
Saint Jack ('79 | 112min) - 9/10 - I don't get tired of this movie, mostly on the strength of Gazzara playing the baddest/kindest motherfucker around.
Top of the Heap ('72 | 90min) - 8.5/10 - Rewatched this with a friend who had never seen it. It's Bad Lieutenant if the cop was black, had wild hallucinations about being an astronaut, and had a civil rights sized chip on his shoulder. It's pretty dark but also completely hilarious.
Quatermass and the Pit ('67 | 97min) - 8/10 - I had read that this was a pretty big influence on Joe Dante, John Carpenter, and Ridley Scott, so I picked it up a while ago. It's a Hammer films cosmic horror, hard sci-fi flick that takes it's time to build up to a trippy ending. You can see it's influence on Alien, Prometheus, The Thing, Lifeforce, etc.

I thought this was pretty solid too. I watched it around the same time I saw The Severed Arm, weirdly.

Carry-On - 7/10 - Solid airport action thriller. Jason Bateman was a surprisingly good villain. Fun premise. It's on Netflix if you're looking for a solid action thriller.

Just watched Carry-On... I'd give it a 9. I'm a sucker for fictional justice. That scene where the black lady cop was fighting with the fake agent in the car was one of the best film action sequences I've seen in ages.

La Cité des enfants perdus - eeehhh/10. I was a big fan of Delicatessen when it came out (haven't seen it in forever, though), and I won't fault this movie one bit for the way it shamelessly and self-admittedly just wants to look like a Terry Gilliam movie, but that's also all it does. Every single shot looks great, really, and I will never not love the Brazil aesthetic, but Gilliam's movies also had interesting scripts, and this one's mostly a string of wacky scenes that serve as an excuse for the movie's production design, and it goes on for two hours.

Terrifyer 3 8/10. My favorite guilty pleasure continues. I’m sorry, I find Art the Clown to be comedy gold. But , man, I’m getting old. Gore never bothered me, but there is a bathroom scene…. Jesus Christ!

The effects were handmade and impressively disgusting, and I can't think of another slasher that was as brutal as this one. Gore-wise it's a real milestone!

old school gorehounds, people with Friday the 13th and Hellraiser 2-shirts. I know plenty of those people
Terrifyer 2 - 7.5/10
Not really a good film (heaps better than All Hallow's Eve, though) and has its lengths, but the gore effects are awesome, and Art the clown is definitely a cool, iconic, and scary slasher villain.

Nosferatu ('24 | 132min) - 8/10 - Would have been a perfect movie if they hadn't spent twenty minutes having characters argue about how vampires probably enjoy drinking piss. Sure, I understand that they could potentially want to drink it more than almost any other liquid on earth - it makes sense, it's just filtered blood - but it seemed completely unnecessary. This is supposed to be a Christmas movie?

Hundreds of beavers - 6/10. NOT AS GOOD AS ADVERTISED. I'd rather just read the out of context post Ross made for an hour and forty
