Totally agree re: Annihilation (I usually hate dance scenes, but Blood machines' and Annihilation's were awesome), haven't seen Devs yet

It's even more impressive when you realize Unforgiven came out a year before Tombstone, and while I won't question the latter's status as a classic, it really comes across as kind of dated and hokey now. Meanwhile I watched Unforgiven again not long ago, and it holds up just fine. It's really kind of shocking how good it is.

Unforgiven doesn't fuck around and it looks timeless in the way it's shot. Tombstone looks very "90s movie stars making a Western". EDIT: UNFORGIVEN, NOT TOMBSTONE, is brutal and everybody in it is great at what they do, even the annoying kid.

Tombstone could have been shot in a high school theater set and had the same impact. All the extras could have been muppets, same outcome.

Tombstone is an excellent film to get people not into westerns to try more. It’s definitely a popcorn flick and good at being that. But compared to ‘real’ westerns it’s kindergarten.Toilet Fleet wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2024 2:12 pm Tombstone could have been shot in a high school theater set and had the same impact. So apart from the obvious (Sergio Leone) what would you guys say are "real"/ good westerns? I got The Great Silence since a friend of mine recommended Sergio Corbucci's films, but what else are the must sees?
I've seen Peckinpah's Wild Bunch, but found it rather boring, but again, I fell asleep a couple of times while watching it...

Asakusa Kid- 7.5/10
Good comedy/ drama about Takeshi Kitano's early career. The actor playing a young Beat Takeshi is phenomenal.

The Newly Deads (Troma) - 2/10
Forgettable trash. 2 points for several scenes with amazing tits and some (rather poorly) handmade gore.
Bodyguard Kiba - 7/10
Ludicrous plot, lots of style, a Jazz soundtrack, a bit of 70s sleaze, and Sonny Chiba kicking ass (but not that much actually).

Rebel Ridge ('24 | 131min) - 8.5/10 - The overpowered protagonist genre has been trying to outdo itself for the past 20 years and as the power creep has escalated with each sequel, it's become harder and harder to maintain a suspension of disbelief. For me, this didn't suffer the same pitfalls while still being similar to something like Reacher. Rebel Ridge does a great job at ratcheting up tension making it's action sequences feel much more impactful than your average "dude walks into room, gets laughed at - then everyone gets mashed into pulp" scene. I think it feels a bit long, but it's a pretty minor quibble considering it kept me engaged for the duration.

Re: Latest movie you watched (1-10 scale)
I fell asleep with the tv on and woke up to some piece of shit with Johnny Depp who is supposed to be a vampire is fighting some chick who is supposed to be a witch but Michelle Pfeiffer is blasting her with a twelve gauge and parts of her skin are cracking off with metallic clanking noises and it's more like she's an android/terminator than a witch. And there's cloe Mortz turning into a bad cgi werewolf. I feel ashamed of whatever I did for this to end up as an auto play recommendation on YouTube.

The Deep Dark - 6/10
Starts off well, has lots of social realism (it's about a group of miners who have to take a professor underground where they find inscriptions on the walls and, eventually, a Lovecraftian monster), takes lots of time to build atmosphere, but the monster (which is very well designed) looks like puppetry, there were many plot holes and logical inconsistencies or downright confusing shit, and I kind of lost interest 30 minutes before the end of the film (honestly I only finished it because I had payed 5 bucks for it).
