Dressed to Kill - 7/10
Some great cinematography (there's an amazingly choreographed and shot scene early in the film where a woman follows a man in a museum), a surprising amount of sleaze, good slow burn suspense, Nancy Allen's smoking hot, and Michael Caine's always great. Wasn't a fan of the ludicrous plot, the transphobia, and there was one particularly grating instance of "it was all just a dream". Some of it is rather clunky, as when characters remember something and parts of an earlier scene are shown again via split screen. Also, some of it felt overly manufactured, like it was supposed to be an exciting thriller first and foremost, as if a working, convincing plot and characters weren't that important to de Palma. Looking forward to watching Carrie next, which seems to be the most highly rated of his films.

Blow Out - 8/10
Great thriller with a great John Travolta and a scary John Lithgow. Starting to dislike Pino Donaggio's soundtracks though, this and Dressed to Kill have unfitting melodramatic scores with lots of strings that remind me of 70s softcore films. Also, everybody bitches about Nancy Allen's acting, but judging from Dressed to Kill and Blow Out, this Dennis Franz dude is a shit actor. Plays his characters in exactly the same way in both films, too.
This song from Body Double (also by Pino Donaggio) is awesome, though:

Beetlejuice 2 - 6/10
Eh, it was better than I expected (I expected a desaster, though) and had some nice moments, among else Michael Keaton chewing the scenery in every scene, and the Soul Train, which admittedly was a bit on the nose, but still fun. Good production design. The clunky way they made fun of artsy types reminded me of films from the 80s. Winona Ryder still can't act for shit
The Hunt
This film is what happens when you take the same attitude displayed in idiotic add campaigns targeting MAGA retards and apply it to a thriller. Besides the enfuriatingly stupid plot, it suffered from an overabundance of tropes that have plagued American films for decades: retarded quips at the most inappropriate moments, people just off the cuff killing other people as if it was nothing and being very cool about it ("woa, she wasn't even looking!!"), people either immediately dying from a gunshot wound or being able to take an insane amount of punishment, depending on what the clunky narrative needs. Most of the fight scenes are embarrassingly bad and feature obviously untrained women throwing shitty kicks and such.
The Car 7/10
Jaws rip-off that has an invincible car as the killer instead of a shark. Does manage to create quite a strong atmosphere at times (sometimes it's quite awkward though, among else when it speeds up its chase scenes, which makes them look like Benny Hill), and it Invests some time in its characters, but IMO it would have worked a lot better as an R-rated exploitation or proper slasher film, it's really mild.

I've been looking forward to this. The director's last movie Revenge was pretty crazy, despite a typical rape/revenge set up. I was expecting a heavy-handed feminist take on it - which it was not. There's great cinematography, effects (I was kind of shocked at the amount of blood/gore), and ratchets up the tension. I have high hopes for The Substance, but don't know anything about it beyond the title and that it probably has to do with drugs.Necrometer wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2024 1:32 am The Substance 8.7/10 feeling elated that I went in nearly blind

Re: Latest movie you watched (1-10 scale)
That's pretty much how I landed in the theater. When I walked in (post-trailers) I glimpsed this "welcome to the movie" promo with the cast addressing the audience, intercut with clips from the movie... nice try, assholes! I bravely averted my gaze.
The heart of the story is something that's familiar to all of us, but it's executed in a great, unhinged way. It's not just evoking Cronenberg, but also Aronofsky, Carpenter, and even my dude Stuart Gordon.
I'm definitely excited to check out Revenge now, despite my distaste for vengeance as a motivating force (see my contentious Furiosa take).

Re: Latest movie you watched (1-10 scale)
yeah I think hollywood is extremely quick to celebrate the underrepresented director - same thing with the insane critical praise for black panther (above-average drama treated like oscar fodder)
her prosthetic cans in that movie = its crowning sfx accomplishment
the day after I saw it, I made an egg sandwich and I'm pretty sure it's the first time I got a double double yolk

Thriller/ They call her One-Eye - 7/10
Watched the Synapse DVD that included the porn scenes. Rough and at times pretty artistic forced prostitution and revenge exploitation film with an abundance of extreme slomo and a fantastic western-like finale.

Darkman - 8/10. Never seen this before. Pretty good. Probably a 7.5 but the ending bumped it to an 8 with that cameo

Recycled quite a bit from the first one, but has enough good material on its own IMO.
