I enjoyed the last third but it mostly got on my nerves.

Shoot The Piano Player - David Goodis - 8.5 - Only knew this from the Truffaut film which pretty much took the source material and made a playful romp that was a loving homage to film noir. This is much different. Hard boiled and fatalist. A life of a thousand stabbing knives. Briskly paced but not rushed and never cops out.

Reading John Hawkes "The Cannibal" I guess a lot of people don't like his later stuff as it's too obtusely post modern? ( The Blood Oranges, The Lime Twig ) I'm enjoying this so far, I guess he worshipped Vladimir Nabokov. Very lyrical style without being as extreme as Nabokov can get.

I'm also reading Nick Cutter's ( nome de plume ) "The Troop" which is a pulp horror reduction of Lord Of The Flies crossed with a story about genetically engineered super tape worms that turn the host into living garbage disposables so I guess that's ironic.
