Clive Barker - The Scarlet Gospels: 8.5/10. Fucking stellar. Will only appeal to fans of Barker and his mythos but it's a great read. High art it is not, but it is one of the most exciting, relentlessly paced, and epic (sorry, I hate saying it but there isn't a more applicable word) horror novels I've ever read. I doubt Barker will ever top The Damnation Game or The Books of Blood, but he's definitely still got it. Best thing he's done in twenty years.

Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki - Haruki Murakami
10/10
It might just be where I'm at in my life but this book is like a punch straight to the heart. It's foreveralone.gif in book format with one of the most perfect endings I've ever seen.
It starts a little slow but once it gets rolling down hill there's no stopping the train. The guy's got the balls to talk about loss in a way nobody else does and it's been a great help for me. An opportunity to crystallize my thoughts about my life and recent events in it.
Thanks, crazy Japanese guy.

Reading the scarlet gospels right now. It doesn't bullshit around, instead it flys out the gate at breakneck speed. Not very settle though, it's pretty low brow actually. Feels like barkers idea of an action movie.

I really enjoyed this but at the same time it seems more like hellraiser fan fiction than something actually written by barker. I'm also really curious if the original 1200 or so page manuscript would have been bloated or turned what was a good read into a masterpiece.Cascade Whore wrote:Reading the scarlet gospels right now. SPOILERSPOILER_SHOW
this supposedly took 3 years to edit but still seems very hacked in some place. I don't like characters introduced then never heard from again, like the demon hybrid woman birth abomination from the opening scene and the giant transsexual magic healer who's abruptly murdered

Alright I'm just about to finish Oryx and Crake, no where near as brutal as the Handmaids Tale but still great. A lot of slapstick and nastyness.
I'm gonna read hyperion next, another person in the real world sugested it. Hope its as cool as everyone says.

Against the Day - 7
Definitely not upper echelon Pynchon imho. Couldn't even really distinguish some characters at times. Only about 2 really mind blowing parts. The last half of the book is infinitely superior though. Riley how is this your favorite? Who knows, it might grow on me.

The only thing I clearly remember about it is airships
I dunno I just found it compulsively readable and moving in an unexpected way. I've been meaning to re-read it so maybe I'll do that.

Schopenhauer's ''Fourfold Root...'' dissertation - better than Hegel/10
reading this as prep for a deep study of ''World as Will...''
it's interesting how adamant he is in denying ''The Absolute''...the materialism of guys at this time was nightmarishly thorough. he spends so much time busting balls on other philosophers that...it becomes anachronistic unintentional comedy.
I'm not ridiculing...it's like coming up on a mountain and laughing at something in the foothills.
but for a student of Guenon, every mountain is a foothill

Dune - 10/10
I've attempted to read this book multiple times in the last five years. Because it starts out slow, I would just put it down but too many people have recommended this over the COURSE OF TIME, so I didn't give up on it. Glad I read it. Book owns. World owns. I want to live amongst the Fremen. FUCK EARTH.
Now reading: Dune Messiah
