NICTITATION would be a decent band name (I'll never forget nietzsche talking about the last men BLINKING... could be a zarathustra concept album)

new tv spot

i haven’t watched anything since the teaser

honestly my hopes are so low based on all the footage i’ve seen being stupid alien children

maybe explosions take longer to render, hence the soft early footage

how are they? 👽

can't believe I never really thought about this before, but Avatar just barely passes the bechdel test. the test's webpage has a whole stream of posts debating this, but it's finally resolved as follows:
Mercedes wrote:Jules is right, it’s an absolute clean pass:

GRACE:
See these magnetic formations. We're
getting close.
TRUDY:
Yeah we are. Look at my instruments.
GRACE:
Yup. We're in the flux vortex.

That’s two named women, Trudy and grace
Having a conversation about something else than a man
(I don’t like the movie, but that’s irrelevant)
It’s a Clean pass 3/3
pretty weak imo!

could be worse

ppl still say there are thin characters, cliched narrative beats. maybe that's mandatory if you want people in both france and india to get their asses to the theater

There's one really concerning thing about Disney putting this out. They're working overtime to control the perception of the film prior to launch. Sure, that's understandable, considering how much $ they're putting into it -- but in the process, they're shutting down free speech.

Just look at the replies that they're hiding on this twitter post:

those things by spider are neither na’vi nor avatars afaik 😵‍💫

hunter I am too chickenshit about spoilers to venture onto twitter! i cannot tell if you’re serious about the free speech thing… I would condone all/any human rights sacrifices in the name of A2 hype.

in other news, I feel like maybe china softened on its zero-COVID stuff because people were going to revolt if they couldn’t see avatar? #culturalimpact

You posted several tweets on this page alone - Are you trying to gaslight me, Ross?! Disney has not hidden any replies that are spoilers.

Now would probably be a good time to mention that I first watched Avatar about five years ago, in 2D, on my 1080p TV. It was pretty okay.

it's barely ok on a tv. I can't even imagine what i'd think of this goofy ass movie if I'd never seen it in massive 3D.

like top gun:maverick, it's as much amusement park ride as it is movie

I too watched Avatar on a TV years ago, and thought it mostly sucked. Similarly, Pacific Rim - watched on a flight and thought it was garbage. And I am right, these movies ARE not all that great in those contexts.

But I reassessed Pacific Rim in 3D with surround sound, and thought it was GREAT. If you're not a fan of spectacle, or rollercoaster ride type flicks, then this might not change your mind the way it changed mine. I'm not really a Guillermo Del Toro fan, but it was clear that he made film-making decisions based on the fact it would be seen in 3D, and I don't think they translated well to 2D.

David Lynch is right about this:

But similarly, it applies to watching 3D movies - well, more specifically, the ones that are filmed with 3D in mind from the jump. There's always going to be shitty cash grab 3D translations of movies - and they give the rest a bad name. I tried watching the 2014 Godzilla movie in 3D recently, and it was done so poorly that I shut it off. It ACTIVELY hurt the already barely-mediocre movie for me.

I love pacific rim so hard it hurts

and yeah it sort of sucks outside the big-screen 3D experience
