I monkeyed around with a few random brand new games. These ones below are actually pretty damn good, based on first impressions and what limited time I gave them. None are on my 'play now' agenda, but if any of you gents are itching for a game and not some big corporate sequel or remaster, give 'em a try. I recommend them base on what I experienced:

It sadness me to say Evil Dead.: Regeneration (PS2) is indeed a big bag of farts. And not sexy lady farts that you sniff while she pops a ballon with her thunder thighs. It’s pretty decent fan fiction and the initial game is very good (Ash running around a demonic insane asylum) but then you get a midget sidekick and the game starts making you do a lot of annoying mechanics you must do in order to beat the enemies, dumb dumb dumb. 👎🏻

Playing Doom 2 via the latest Brutal Doom build and it’s better than any new game (indie or AAA) I’ve played in recent years. 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻🤘🏻

After Doom I don’t know. I might beat Silent Hill 2 yet again. PS2 emulator supports custom textures so it now look, runs, and plays better than any other version, even modded.

Beat Brutal Doom 2.

That Silent Hill 2 remake is out. Ha! I was going to replay the PS2 version all fancied up. I thought the remake was a year away. I think I will play the PS2 version though. Then the remake. See what’s up.

I know my PC is no spring chicken but new Silent Hill 2 is kind of a mess. I go 60 frames to 28 randomly. It looks nice though. I bet this thing needs a hundred patches. I’ll wait.

In the biggest asshole move I’m playing Aliens:Colonial Marines (with a mod that’s supposed to make it playable).

When this fucker came out on the 360 so long ago it made me so mad I stopped pre-ordering games ever since. I actually can’t remember what about it made me mad though. Was it really boring, maybe? I just remember finally getting off of the ship which constitutes the beginning of the game and landing on the planet from Aliens. And that’s where I stopped and immediately sold it back the GameStop.

Well, I’m not up to that part yet, but this fucking fan mod/patch is a wonderment. I’m actually liking the game this time. It’s actually sort of nerve-racking. Your AI teammates are actually useful. Graphics at max detail in 4K are damn nice. The soundtrack which is reminiscent of the Aliens score is pretty damn good. Of course it’s still kind of buggy and I expect the thing to come crumbling down isn’t second now. Now I don’t know if I’m just not feeling these new games, but this fucking thing is one of the better games that I played the whole year… thus far.

Not so fast, faggot. I might as well change my nickname to The Jinx. Got a touch past where I left off back in the day and now I'm stuck. Looks like there's a problem and Xenomorphs aren't spawning correctly and I'm stuck. Can't progress. Restarted the check point and level several times. At least, Duke Nukem Forever could be finished.

I can't have nice things. I'm just going to pick something horror themed alphabetically, whatever it is, that is installed on the computer and play it next. Fuck it.

Blood 2. Good, I'm sure this will crash like always.

Blood 2 has crashed upwards of 50 times. I am not exaggerating and I don't care. It's a completely underrated late 90's FPSer and my guilty pleasure. I like it more than the original. I have this bad boy running with fancy next textures at 4K and a HUD that doesn't need a magnifying glass to see. Not done, yet, but I will. And as for the crashes, I quick save so much it's not an issue and the time it takes to crash, restart the game and load the quick save is still noticeably faster than loading times on newer games. Plus, when the main villain is the Nature Boy Ric Flair you know you got something special. Blood 2, you might not like it, but you'll learn to love it. Whoo!

Finished Blood 2 and I didn’t remember the ending going into it, even though I beat it many times. And that’s because it doesn’t really have one. Best unfinished and rushed out game ever! 👍🏻👍🏻

Tried the PC port of that PlayStation samurai game, Ghost of Something. Beautiful and runs well on PC. Writing is a joke and I literally predicted EVERYTHING right before it happened hoping it wouldn’t be but it was. That stereotype that studios diversity hire for diversity over talent, yeah. Reeks of it. I was sort of enjoying myself then I drank 12 Carlsberg beers, got mad, and then deleted it. Can’t remember why.

Tried the PC port of The Last of Us. What a rotten port! Probably need a NASA computer to run this so it looks good and can run at a solid 60 frames. Jesus!

Installed Aliens vs Predator 2 (by the same studio that did Blood 2). Finally got it running on 16:9 for the first time ever and it hasn’t crashed yet. Looks like Monolith is my lucky charm.

Hahaha! I got to the very very end of the game, and there was a graphical glitch and the end boss was completely invisible. I had to fight the Queen Alien that moves like the Flash while it was invisible and it was impossible. Deleted and I watched the end cinematics on YouTube. The game was two thumbs up, best Alien game (haven’t played Isolation, yet), in theory, but that glitch... Goddamnit, man.

Tried SpaceHamburger’s favorite game Warhammer 4K: Space Marine 2. Well now. I like everything expect the actual game which I found kind of one dimensional. Would have loved this back in my teens and 20’s. I might have considered playing more but when I got to the second level my PC told me to go fuck myself. I could lower my setting a lot maybe, but here’s the thing with new games, especially Unreal Engine 5. Older games when you lower the graphics sort of go from 360 era graphics to PS2 era, but they still resemble each other. These new games, because of all the shit on screen and details don’t scale down well, they look like they’re missing assets or like a very bad indie game. I also think developers are lazy and are reliant on that AI scaling shit like DLSS which my graphics card can’t do without a third party mod.

Redownloaded the Halo Master Chief Collection and they’ve been doing stuff since I last tried one of these, looks amazing, but I’m not ready for any Halo yet.

Been playing this:

It’s the PS1 version of Quake 2, I guess. But It’s really a remixed version of Quake 2 with a new mini-boss character. Graphically it’s Quake 2 Remaster by way of Dario Argento and TRON, and it rules!

Now playing the Resident Evil 5, the only one in the series I never finished (not counting those light shooters or garbage like Survivor). In a move that I admit was both racist and embarrassing I replaced the black chick with Lara Croft via mod and now I like the game better. You know, it’s not a bad game on its own, but it’s obvious they didn’t get why 4 was so well liked and they took random moments that were great in 4 and over use it and do at the wrong moments. Messy game, and the Las Plagas outbreak in Africa is a metaphor for AIDS.

I mean, I don’t need to type it out, out loud, right? We all know Resident Evil 5 crashes badly at the start of chapter 3, and I can’t continue. Because of course, that would happen to me now. Just when the game introduced literal spear chucking Africans.

Tried a ton of demos and things for a bunch of these independent first person shooters. I can’t remember all the names… one was Devilated, another was Moon Mystery. I pretty much hated all of them. I’m becoming worried is this video game depression or does all new games just suck. Unfinished Blood 2 is miles above all this trash.

I did start Vampyre, with a Y. It’s an interesting enough vampire RPG so far. I messed with some nVidia filters and the game looks like a Dario Argento film and it’s beautiful. I don’t hate it, it’s sort of holding my attention, but can it last?

I've now beaten every co-op mission in Space Marine 2 at the new Lethal difficulty they patched in, I'm replaying the campaign on the highest difficulty, maxed out four of the six classes and working on a fifth even though I don't particularly like the class, and I'm sitting at about 150 hours overall. It's really sad, guys. I'd ask for help, but I'm not sure I'd accept it.

It’s obvious you like it and I suppose a major reason you like it is because you enjoy doing what you do in the game. The gameplay or mechanics. When you can just do these ‘mechanics’ without thinking about them is when you’re found a game you like. I’m not talking about not having to solve Dark Souls boss pattern or Silent Hill puzzle. I mean when you do what ever the game does and you don’t think to yourself ‘Oh, the game is doing this now’. For example, the Vampyr game I WAS playing isn’t bad, but it became clear after a few hours I’m just sort of doing A for awhile then B, with C sprinkled in between the two. Now, I don’t want to play anymore because it just feels like a video game that is making me do this stuff over and over. It has nothing to do with graphics or even story. The Witcher 3, in a way, is not much different than Vampyr, really, but I enjoy it and can do the same shit with out me thinking the game is doing game stuff. Why is DOOM infinitely better than Borderlands? I’m not sure what the formula is, but I’m seeing this is a huge problem for me. Most new games feel like games, so I’m more than willing to replay older shit I’ve played before because they are an experience not a task or chore. I don’t know, am I making sense?

That said, now playing DOOM 3 with some anniversary mod and the $50 Red Dead Redemption PC port that I’m not spending a dollar on because fuck you, Rockstar, for charging $50 for a 15 year old port, not remaster.

Not so fast,90 Fiancé viewers! Shadows of the Damned PC port came out. I have odd memories of this. It was the last game I beat before Summer of the Bill 2011 ended. It was the last console game I beat in a long streak of beating every game I bought ((360 era). And let’s just make up two other boring facts. I’m going back in.

i think youre saying you prefer a solid raw gameplay loop to feel the best and be the main reason why youre there as opposed to gameplay being a close second to meta progression or addictive (but sometimes fun) systems that contextualize gameplay

Viddygamez journalism speak is always hilarious.

But yeah, progression mechanics are all well and good, but they tend to just be a convenient excuse to do the same thing over and over again because it feels good to play, basically. What I've realized because of SM2 is that in my case, that's basically games with a combat system that you have to learn properly to master, basically, and that's why I've been in love with Fromsoft games for the last 15 years.

This has also made me realize that what's considered "hard" these days is basically exactly that - games that force you to actually learn them. I'm absolutely terrible at anything fast and twitchy, I couldn't get out of the first level of Cuphead, and I just get my head blown off every five seconds in PVP shooters, but I platinumed Sekiro. Because it's actually kind of slow and not that hard, you just have to pay attention.
