Do they still have that absolutely terrible drum sound that they had on the debut?
No, that's what makes the current one so awesome. The production is pretty tight/standard for "professional" death metal.
That's exactly why I can't stand it.
Nothing turns me off quicker than a sanitized sterile production job on a DM record. Take back your typewriter drum beats and your perfect sculpted guitar tone and give me something with a little bit of soul.

Any Nocturnal Graves fans here? They have some sort of 3 7 inch pack package release coming out in the near future that I'm looking forward to.

Totally agree with you there...but at this point death metal is old enough to have many different "movements" going on inside of it at the same time. There definitely are those "pro" death metal bands that make really great sounding, utterly soulless, boring records. And yeah, a lot of people here like Nocturnal Graves...

Gracias. Guess I'll be picking up both of those along with Ignivomous and Embrace of Thorns.

It's nothing special IMO, but I believe it's just their first demo. Maybe they'll progress/get better or more original as they go along.

saw these guys' first show a few months ago and will see them again in a few weeks at the Gospel Of The Horns final Australian show - nice slowish death metal which is unsurprising seeing as they were all in Stone Wings - I read recently they are recording again at the moment - tops blokes too

This band Incrust isn't too bad-if you can appreciate full blown Incantation worship, which is more than all right by me.

The new Blood Red Throne is pretty decent. The first half of the album is pretty strong, but the second half gradually became less interesting. The first song is a lot of fun though! It sounds a lot like Suffocation, especially the bass playing/tone.

Well, their bassist is Erlend...he plays in a few tech death bands and could probably grind circles around Suffocation's bassist. The guy is really good.

I just started listening to Stargazer and think they're pretty rad. I don't know how recent the record I've been listening to (Occidentale Magick) is, but they have a record coming out on Profound Lore sometime soonish and no one talks about them, so what the fuck.

It was a Seagram's Wine Cooler, actually. Peach-Persimmon Pussyheart.

The only thing working against Stargazer is their name. Good, weird shit.

Has anyone else noticed that the drums (esp. the snare) on a lot of the newest crop of death metal albums are simply too loud? I mean...to the point where it ruins the entire album. I don't know what is causing this.

We've talked about them, well a few people. The Scream That Tore the Sky is much better, imo. Some of the songs on OM are from The Scream... album.

yeah I like The Scream better although OM is just a compilation anyway - OM does have Magikkian though which is my fave StarGazer song and is awesome live

I have to track down the split with Sacriphyx

If you like Stargazer go ahead and check out all the other bands those guys are in too. The thing about the Australian scene right now is that it seems to be pretty small, actually...all of the guys are in 3-4 bands or whatever.

Outside of that I've been listening to Abysmal Torment's "Omnicide" a lot lately. It's a huge improvement on their last release, IMO. Very cool guitar playing.

are you familiar with Misery's Omen? it's Damon and Denny from Stargazer but the main man is Anthony who is also in Sacriphyx (and was in Ghastly and toured with Stargazer on the Nunslaughter tour). The self titled cd is a comp of their demos/7"s and is kick arse "suicidal black metal" and well worth hearing. The Hope Dies album is good but not quite as tortured as the s/t

I am still yet to hear Lord Of The Command which is a death metal band with Damon. Cauldron Black Ram is another band with those 2 and is slow death metal and they are killer live. They have a new album out soon too I believe which I hope is as good as Skulduggery
