I made the same mistake of getting a 10,000 RPM hard drive. They happen to have about the same random seek time as a 7200 RPM. 15,000RPM HDDs are actually SLOWER than 7200s.

EDIT: I bought mine 5 years ago though.

I have a rig unsuitable for more than HL2

Intel E5200, 2x2GB DDR2 PC6400 RAM, GF9400, 640GB drive short-stroked to 150GB, 2005FPW monitor

I built a cheap machine I could Hackintosh down the road and swap parts out on easily last April or so. With the new job, it's about time to Hackintosh this fucker. Windows 7 is nice, but I genuinely miss OS X.

You could take a 640GB (320G platter x 2) and make something about 1% slower than the Raptor for about 70% less. Oh, and I used to have a Raptor (second revision when they fixed the NCQ issue) - my current 640GB short stroked drive is comparable to that one, although if the access pattern is honestly random, the Raptor would have edged ahead noticeably.

Now, I'd rather just get an SSD. 2x speedup is nothing compared to 10x, and it scales linearly in RAID0. Dual Intel G2 SSDs is on the shopping list for me, they absolutely rape Raptors in real life performance and performance seems to scale fairly well per $ spent until the diminishing returns area for DRAM and Flash memory.
