Alright here's a weird thought - we've discussed on this forum how odd it is that zombies are popularly depicted as 'eating brains', since that was never in the Romero movies. I think the consensus here was that the idea was probably popularized by the Simpsons Halloween episode, and that that script was probably influenced by Return of the Living Dead.

Now think about ROTLD, with its very Misfit-like punks... the whole movie has a Misfits vibe to it. Could that BRAIN EATERS video have been a source of inspiration for ROTLD?
