The project has changed significantly since Oscar winner Michael Arndt split as writer on Episode VII in the fall, with duties taken up by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark. According to multiple insiders, the reason for the parting of ways was not due to a timeframe issue, as has been reported, but rather due to a difference in opinion of which characters to emphasize.

Arndt is said to have focused on the offspring of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), with the original trilogy heroes taking on supporting roles. Abrams, however, wanted Episode VII to focus on the classic trio of characters, so audiences could have one more chance to enjoy them before a fitting send-off. The new characters, the offspring, will now be in supporting roles, according to these sources, and take center stage in Episode VIII and IX. Some characters have disappeared from the Arndt script and new ones are being drafted.

I'm sort of shocked at how terrible this news is feeling - I was so psyched for those three to be in the movies, but them being the stars sounds atrocious. I'm trying to think if this could be pulled off with two proper actors playing Luke & Leia - Harrison Ford alongside Angelica Huston & Bill Murray carrying a movie? I guess if Wes Anderson were directing.

Does anyone here watch the Clone Wars animated series? I find them to be excellent, the stories are so much more detailed and original then the prequels.

Almost a year after this was posted, but which Clone Wars animated series? If you mean the Genndy one, yes I've seen it in full and love it. If you mean the CGI one, I've only seen the first two seasons so far.
Also this whole new series/Disney buy out has been a train wreck so far.

The worst part to me is that it might end up putting Dark Horse out of business. I've never read any of their Star Wars comics because I just don't care enough about SW anymore, but apparently they were pretty decend, and even if they weren't, I'm sure it was a huge cash cow for them that enabled them to put out all the good stuff that I did read... and now it's gone to Marvel.

Jedi had kids and took partners in the expanded universe material straight through till the prequels hit from what I remember. I don't know why but when the clone wars stuff actually came out they made the jedi do the whole monastic non-attatchment trip. Not a stretch in my mind, fits well enough with the vibe you get from the original 3 movies - not a defense of the latter material or of any disruption of all the secondary comics/novels whatever that people enjoyed so much, of course.

Marvel starting to put out SW comics is such a no-brainier now that I can't believe I didn't see it coming. I've never read any of the Dark Horse books, but that shit is an institution - I knew about them even when I was a kid, without actually seeing them or having access to them.
