I will say that I saw STP at a HUUUUUGE festival in Atlanta when I was 19 and it was fucking Earth-shattering. I, like a massive percentage of all 33-year-old white dudes, had at least a passing fascination with STP for a few months in my pre/early teens before I moved on to Megadeth/Slayer/etc. and never looked back. By the time I was 19 I was a super-elitist dickhead who had been listening to death/black/grind/etc. shit for a couple years but acted like some kind of too-cool-for-school elder authority (you probably did it too, it is okay; we all do it). I ended up at this festival partially on accident and while I HATED most of the bands playing (I distinctly remember going out of my way to make sure I didn't hear so much as a faint echo of Kid Rock), there were a couple who I could at least tolerate. Anyway, one thing led to another and I ended up taking ecstasy for like the third time ever and watching STP. There were well over 50,000 people there and NO ONE had as much fun as I did; no fucking question about it. Sure, it was the drugs. But I knew every word to almost every song and while I've had some truly transcendent experiences while watching live music (I was stone-cold sober watching Prurient and Godflesh this year and it was utterly overwhelming) there's something about being a teenager, high as fuck on quality drugs, watching some previously forgotten stepping stone from your musical past come rocketing back into reality like a god damn atomic bomb was some incalculably intense shit.

dude....i remember when hearing 'army ants' on a radio station in san antonio in spring of 94 right before 'purple' came out. i had already been wearing 'core' out for about a year at that point so i was so stoked to be in on hearing this brand new tune. he really was a rock star in the purest sense of the word. he was lucky to play with such great bands that knew exactly what to do when it came down to giving him a platform to do his thing. love it or hate it but the fact is you simply cannot escape the fact that he knew how to get down and rock. now i feel sorry for those dudes in THE WILDABOUTS because they seem like some pretty solid players in their own right....had weiland been a bit more on his game i think they could have made their mark as well. i'm a pretty jaded and cynical person but i have to admit that hearing he died kinda gave me a twinge of sadness. STP was big in the ol' rock arsenal for me and without him fronting that band...i highly doubt they would have got the attention they got. great, technically solid band with a ROCK STAR for a front man.....the same fucking reason VELVET REVOLVER can talk about auditioning assholes like corey taylor and whoever else they want but mark my words....that band is never going to even try to reform. STP should consider doing something new as well....chester bennington is no scott weiland....no matter what they try and tell people. deleo brothers ripping on scott because he was such a maniac but deep down you know they were so fucking bummed that no matter who they stick on the microphone in the future is never going to even be close to scott weiland.
