Fact #7
From an empirical viewpoint, the problem with Free Will (and causality) is reconciling determinism and freedom to make sense of morality.

I did it! I watched THIS so you don’t have to. I saw it. I saw what a Rizzler is. As far as I can tell it’s a small obese child with some sort of Tourette’s tick. My kids claim it’s a ‘thing’ were people shush! and mew. I guess in an age where everyone gets a trophy for just being able to use the toilet without dying they stand up for even the most obnoxious of retarded kids and make excuses for them.postaddiction wrote: ↑Sat Nov 02, 2024 4:29 pm

I miss him, he's a great dude. I used to play some of the Grindfeld stuff on my college radio show back in the day. Kurt, right? Or am I mixing up names?

Re: the NOT WORTH ITS OWN THREAD thread could be revived
In spring of 2018 I took benadryl to sleep at night, and when I woke up I laid in bed for 3 hours making a plan for what to do if my brain was ever teleported back in time into my 5th grade self. I thought out every detail as meticulously as I possibly could. In the end I decided that I accept my life the way it has happened and wouldn't sacrifice the current timeline for the chance at a re-do, even if I could somehow guarantee massive fortune from the Google IPO or superbowl gambling wins. But I am prepared, just in case the brain teleport ever does happen.
I mentioned this in much more general terms at a Halloween party recently, and I found out literally every guy standing in that room (probably 6 people) had gone through the exact same thought experiment. Most of them had a "yeah here's what you do" insight, like they were prepped for this incredibly specific twilight zone scenario.
None of the women there were even interested in having the conversation. "Uggh why are we talking about this" Fucking fascinated me.

One little hobbit anime guy kept mentioning that he wouldn't use his adult knowledge to try to seduce a 5th grade girl, because that would be unethical. He mentioned repestedly that it would be an "unfair advantage". I was ignoring him but it was absolutely awesome to watch somebody tell on themselves like that.

Man, I've always been fascinated with alternate realities/timelines etc. shit like that and it's probably why I think Season 5 of LOST is one of the best TV seasons ever. I have definitely thought about those "if I could go back" scenarios quite a bit in my life, especially when I was at some low, low times, but where I am now is in one of the best spots I've ever been in mentally and physically so I can't regret anything.

i have cooked up this folk wisdom about men/women and their perceptions of self/change/etc... this is half horseshit but let's give it a whirl
women often get a tattoo of a butterfly - this is something beautiful, but it's also something that used to be a gross/ugly caterpillar. let's say this is a statement of "I have arrived - bask in the glory of my optimal state"
men clearly can't get a butterfly tattoo because that would be totally gay, but there's a relevant tattoo men DO get: the koi, a sad carp that famously transforms into an epic dragon, and this transformation is mediated via a bit of a hero's journey. now, if you were a manly guy, would you choose to get the koi or the dragon? I feel like the dragon is the obvious choice, but any dude who knows this story typically opts for the koi. to me, this suggests that the male self-perception tends to be "I'm not done yet" - the self is viewed more of a work in progress
I feel like this sort of aligns with what you observed with the guys/gals at the party...
as for the premise itself, my brain breaks whenever I think about it. is the "go back" a permanent thing? like... no undo? that would be so so so fucked, psychologically! it would be so much fun to be a scientist in that setting, though: just like you can game the stock market, it would be insanely easy to be the "most insightful" researcher (who already knows a few decades' worth of "new" discoveries)
