I go on Deicide benders on a fairly regular basis and I rarely go past Once Upon the Cross.

I do like Serpents of the Light but it doesn't hold up against their first 3.

Geeheeb wrote: Mon Feb 20, 2023 8:30 pmI don't know about that, but my group of friends all thought the thin guitar tone was a "cash grab" influenced by the popularity of black metal at the time. That sounds a kinda stupid now, but I also remember thinking they probably had peaked with OUtC and I do think that observation holds up.
yeah it was received as a bit of a sellout-y record, but nothing too dramatic. sort of how Divine Intervention was clearly DIFFERENT but it's more about a dramatic shift in production than anything else

I have been thinking a lot about the idea of the "poser" lately, mostly because manowar wrote the book on posers/posing and they've been revealed to be the biggest posers of all (living in mom's basement or whatever)

Serpent of the Light is my 2nd favorite Deicide record, poser status confirmed.

I’d also like to express my fondness of that particular record

Never been a big Deicide fan but I'm in the Once Upon The Cross camp. I think the thicker sound on that album has a bit to do with them intentionally playing the songs slower than originally written to pad out the run time. ( and the guitars just being a lot beefier than their first two records) I really like the first two tracks on Legion.

The original statement wasn’t a personal critique, just a memory intended to make fun of that asshole’s taste. Mainly because he talks like he tastes a lot of assholes.

I bought Scars Of The Crucifix over a decade ago from the used bin. ( still paid too much ). I ended up giving the CD to my cousins boyfriend because he likes the band a lot more than I do and he didn't have much money because he's a junkie. He's still a junkie but now also a colossal asshole. ( he was an asshole then but it's gotten exponentially worse ). That's my super cool tangential non sequitur Deicide story.

He complains about Devourment being basketball shorts/sideways hat metal. Him and Captain Piss should have a steel cage death match.

He’s actually wearing a Devourment shirt in another video though? Maybe he was talking about their fan base or a different band and I misheard.

I actually liked Botch back when they were around. Got to see them headline a couple small places, saw them open for Neurosis in Portland at La Luna and their last Portland show was direct support for Dillinger Escape Plan at the old Meow Meow venue. I was also at their ‘last’ show in Seattle with Blood Brothers, Harkonen, and Playing Enemy (who graciously put me on their guestlist). Offered to buy Joe Preston a beer at the show but he smiled and said he doesn’t drink.

I had these reunion shows on the radar but when they went on sale the other day I was in a work meeting that I couldn’t mute/camera off so I missed out but a friend of mine went full crazy and got multiple tickets to all 3 Portland shows so I’ll probably head down for at least one or two.
