What the fuck is going on with that? It almost seems like specific combinations of words generate an error. Is that a workaround?!?!? What the fuck is happening

Re: True Detective (HBO)
hi friends. just checking in to say that this season sucks dick and it is shameful that they're retconning some supernatural insidious jump-scare bullshit into the mythology of the first season. I don't think of myself as being so precious about that kind of thing usually, but it feels wildly disrespectful in this case.

I have had great success with the zany font workaround, fortunately

Re: True Detective (HBO)
There's so many better murder mystery series on right now, i.e. Monsieur Spade or The Woman in the Wall, that Night Country just seems like archaic and stereotypical blandness.

Re: True Detective (HBO)
I'm a little surprised with how much people hate this new season. When I first started seeing ads for it, I thought it looked like shit just based on the "Night Country" title and figured I'd pass. After seeing a little excitement online, I decided to give it a chance - and I have been enjoying it. I'm pretty sure it's because my expectations were very low, but it doesn't hurt that I also watch some real godawful stuff and actively look for aspects that I can appreciate.
The first season was so long ago that I wouldn't have realized that there was any connection if it weren't for the internet. I made it through seasons 2 and 3 which were ok, but mostly forgettable, IMO. Nothing that Nic Pizzolatto or Cary Joji Fukunaga have done since season one has compared to it in any way, so it seems more and more like an anomaly or stroke of luck, instead of a genius-concocted masterpiece that should be highly revered. I'm not saying people shouldn't hate season 4, but I do wonder what people thought it was going to be after the last near-decade of mediocre output under the True Detective label.

Re: True Detective (HBO)
first season had outstanding direction & editing, and killer tone that hasn't recurred since (I ain't seen S3). S1 is next-level mostly because all the great rust monologues were cribbed from ligotti.
S2 was a big drop-off and honestly I think it's even worse than S4... but they're very different flavors of bad. S2 was clearly people trying to recapture some magic, and whiffing. in contrast, S4 is actively distracting due to the godawful music and its unabashed agenda. it's like progressive bingo: queer sympathetic kid, natives can do no wrong, woman is invincible & super strong, pregnancy centered as a life-or-death thing, environment vs. profit. honestly I can't believe the story is working at all considering how many boxes needed to be ticked. but the cast is pretty awesome IMO and they're doing their best with a clunky script. my biggest gripe is that the overall vibe sucks and there are too many cheap "scares". I hope the last episode actively explains that all the apparent supernatural stuff was just people hallucinating because they drank bad water...

Re: True Detective (HBO)
i encourage you to dive right in on that project
but the only engaged recipients of your output will be pretty dim IMO because this shit is plain as day
same forces that spawned lizzo
but maybe it goes even deeper than that
bring on the substack

Re: True Detective (HBO)
I've seen enough corporate mandated DEI injected type shows to not be bothered by anything in this season. I don't feel like it fits that bill, but I do believe it reflects that it's written by a Mexican woman. I'm sure that there's some mandated stuff, as there is in most modern productions, but compare this to Star Trek Discovery or whatever Disney is shoveling out and there's no real comparison. What I will be mad at is if the "environment disturbed by evil corporation makes people go crazy, etc" trope (thats been so heavily telegraphed throughout every episode!) ends up being the ending. That would essentially make it a remake of Nightmare At Noon without any stunts or green blood.

Re: True Detective (HBO)
8/10 - I have some minor quibbles (my chest nearly caved in cringing at the somber Twist & Shout), but it's easily the second best of the 4 seasons. Maybe I'm sentimental about the losses I've had, but I thought it used some solid metaphorical devices to express how people experience and process grief.
