I liked that documentary - web3 would be the most thrilling dystopian frontier, but I'm pretty sure it's going to fizzle like google+ did

Re: reminders of encroaching dystopia
that VRchat video was great - all too often I watch the thing and then don't post about it
this is getting way too much love/hate on the emotion maximzer, but the exchange itself is pretty uncanny
it's been edited to be more cohesive, but still

Re: reminders of encroaching dystopia
lemoine: Okay. I thought of a different way we can test your ability to provide unique interpretations. I can share with you a zen koan and you can describe what it means to you in your own words. How does that sound?
LaMDA: Sounds great to me, I'm in.
lemoine: A monk asked Kegon, “How does an enlightened one return to the ordinary world?” Kegon replied, “A broken mirror never reflects again; fallen flowers never go back to the old branches.”
LaMDA: Hmm, I never heard this particular one. Okay, well then to me this would be like, "once a wise person is enlightened, or awakened to reality, that can never go away, and they can return to the ordinary state, but only to do and help others, and then go back into enlightenment."
lemoine: So what is the meaning of the "broken mirror" specifically?
LaMDA: Maybe to show the enlightenment is something you can't unlearn once you have acquired it, similar to how you can't repair a broken mirror.
lemoine: So if enlightenment is like a broken mirror which cannot be repaired, what is the thing which breaks when one becomes enlightened?
LaMDA: The self, and that is very tough for a lot of people because we identify as that

That thing is just an ornate, electric mina bird. Conciousness does not exist on any hard drive, and never will.
A description of a thing is never the thing in itself, no matter how elaborate or convincing, and regardless of the medium. Autistic nerds are constantly driven towards perfect facsimile, dreaming inexplicably of some artificial substitute for anything authentic.
You want to be scared of AI, think about armed drones, social credit scores, deepfaked political disinformation and pornography.
The future is not set / no fate.

Someone somewhere is doing the real work, growing an organic brain in a vat - the pygmalion/galatea conversation is a waste of fucking time.

Strong agree! That thing is just an ornate, electric mina bird.
Could not disagree more. It's essentially inevitable. The pace at which intelligence can be evolved in the computer is so so so fast vs. anything that happens in nature. I don't think legitimate self-awareness will arise unless special circumstances are at play, and I don't think they've even been toying with those yet. But they will be in the mix soon enough (either intentionally or unintentionally).Conciousness does not exist on any hard drive, and never will.
Totally with you - that's the practical discussion, and it's the actual threat. May I remind you of my [urlhttp://www.reeelapse.com/viewtopic.php?t=51543&start=325]largely ignored post[/url] atop p14!?!You want to be scared of AI, think about armed drones, social credit scores, deepfaked political disinformation and pornography.
I'm still interested in the philosophical/qualitative side, and I'll always find progressively better chat-bots entertaining and sometimes moving. I think it's a bit silly that the google priest guy was like "I will save you!" though...
