I've always fucking hated Apocalypto and I don't understand how people don't see the blatant racism and Western chauvinism in it, so the fact that this is what Chad thinks about it is very validating to me.

I was particularly impressed with the muppet panther, yeah.

In all seriousness, though, of course it's a well made movie - it's Mel Gibson. The fucker's insanely talented, no matter what you think of his smooth-brained conspiracy nut idiocy otherwise. But saying that is basically the same thing as saying you can appreciate Leni Riefenstahl for her technical proficiency.

The message of Apocalypto is that the Mayans were brainless, decadent, despicable savages who deserved to be wiped out by the Christian invaders, and it delivers this message with the same attention to period detail and interest in the actual culture that's being portrayed as, uh, well, Braveheart, come to think of it. This is 100% clear and intentional and they even made sure to include an opening quote that explains this in case you have an overactive apologist reflex from listening to too much Black Metal. He's telling you what he wants to say. It's right there. Take him at his word.

ehhh i dont know man im pretty sure that was definitely not the intent or message of that movie. i remember thinking it was a little bit of a masterpiece but i havent seen it since the theatre though

if they were brainless and despicable why'd he make them all so memorably 3 dimensional and cool as hell

Bone Tomahawk is definitely racist... like in the way that old westerns are racist. It's portraying a group of Native Americans as brutal savages. Granted, it didn't seem racist to me when I first watched it, and I wouldn't necessarily say that S. Craig Zahler intended for it to have a racist meaning behind it - but that doesn't mean it doesn't affect Native Americans.

Every movie Zahler has done I've enjoyed (with the exception of screenwriting Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich - that fucking suuuuucked) - but they are all problematic in one way or another. The last flick he made even starred Mel Gibson as a racist cop. Zahler has ties to Dallas Sonnier, who is a right-wing producer dirtbag who is currently working on the entertainment division of The Daily Wire. This comes after he had to sell Fangoria and dissolve his production company, Cinestate, when it was found he was running cover for Adam Donaghey's sexual assaults.

In the movie bone tomahawk, a native American character looks at the camera and says explicitly to the audience that he doesn't percieve the troglodytes as a tribe of native Americans

He put that in the movie so that you can try as best you can to stop thinking about Twitter for 2 or 3 hours, if you want to

I don't know if I'd call Dragged Across Concrete or Brawl in Cell Block 99 absolutely fucking incredible, but I thought they were solid, and own them on blu ray. Bone Tomahawk is his best, for sure - but I can acknowledge that Native Americans have a valid point if they find it offensive, despite the dialog written by the white guy that says "no offense, guys" 8)

Dragged Across Concrete comes across as a bit more nuanced. Gibson's character is kind of a piece of shit but it's more complicated than that. It also portrays the three bank robbers as much more overtly racist and sadistic monsters that you wouldn't root for at all and black get away drivers as far more sympathetic.

Also Sheri O Terrie's dancing native girl in SNL's "real lesbians" skit is racist

Panos Cosmatos?
Julia Ducournau?
Brandon Cronenberg?
Gaspar Noe?

There's quite a few directors who haven't gotten a Hollywood blank check and are making high quality flicks, IMO. I'd hardly consider Zahler alone in what he can do with a smaller budget.

I mean, c'mon - Hereditary had a smaller budget than Dragged Across Concrete.
