July, 1967: On the evening of her engagement party, virginal Debby is dropped off at home, only to discover her mother in bed with her uncle and a neighbor. Shocked and distraught, Debby runs out of the house but is soon accosted by a group of young black militants who kidnap her and bring her to their remote hideout. One of the most controversial and notorious hardcore films of the 1970s, the Michigan lensed HOT SUMMER IN THE CITY remains a pivotal example of regional sex-filmmaking as it merges local history with an exploitation film framing while showcasing an a "one-and-done" cast. Marking the feature film directing debut of soon-to-be prolific producer, Harry Mohney (credited here as "The Hare"), the story was adapted from the classic underground paperback Black Abductor by prolific film editor "T James Write," who restructured the the novel's setup as an alternate history account of the origins of Detroit's deadly 1967 "long hot summer." This now legendary film at last makes its way to Blu-ray, scanned in 2K from its 16mm camera negative.

Florida children's author, husband plead guilty to abusing and neglecting their 3 kids

A Florida children's author and her husband pleaded guilty to abusing and neglecting their three children, leaving one girl hospitalized in critical condition with multiple organ failure.

She was 8 years old, according to local news reports. She weighed just 40 pounds, arrest records show. The children were beaten with a device called a "whacker," locked up, and not allowed to speak to each other.

Jennifer Wolfthal, 45, who wrote a children's book called "A Real Friend," and her husband, 43-year-old Joseph Wolfthal, an engineer at Lockheed Martin, pleaded guilty to three counts of child abuse and three counts of child neglect each earlier this week, according to court records reviewed by USA TODAY.

The couple was arrested on child abuse charges on New Year’s Day in 2021, after Joseph brought their 8-year-old daughter to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with pneumonia, a staph infection and failure of the liver and kidneys, according to the arrest report obtained by WFTV.

The child was also malnourished, had multiple bruises, a skin infection and several open wounds, authorities said.

The new charges came after investigators interviewed the couple's children, who alleged that they were spanked to the point of bleeding, doused in cold water, and locked in their bedrooms, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The children often went for months without bathing, and were seriously malnourished, the arrest report alleged.

One child allegedly told investigators that her parents "would take turns disciplining them," and would "spank her in the same spot to the point of drawing blood."

The police report says that the children claimed they were punished by being doused with cold water in their beds, and "left to sleep in that condition overnight."

Death Book by Petr Davydtchenko

For his three-year piece, Go and Stop Progress (2016-2019), Davydtchenko survived living exclusively off roadkill. The death of animals due to automotive technology is reconfigured as having the potential for regeneration and prolonged life. Based in the south of France, he repetitively traversed the countryside looking for carcasses, which were checked for signs of disease and effectively prepared for storage and the table. The extensive archive, chronicling his day-to-day routine, is presented in Death Book alongside ingredient lists and meals such as fox soup.

Rat Race (2021) is an extension of Davydtchenko’s fixation on self-sustenance and commitment to a fringe urban existence. The work revolves around one particular playground in the city, which had become unusable by local children due to a rat infestation, making international news. He visited the city and, over time, worked with the local population to document, cook and eat the rats. Not only a form of population control, Davytdchenko created a transgression, when he presenting the dead vermin as an asset class. The photographic documentation of the rat skulls were tokenized on the blockchain, creating new value in an alternative, decentralized, financial system. In Death Book, the rat skulls are methodically presented in a formal visual language that becomes familiar throughout the book. In the same vein, referencing images from an autopsy and the criminal underworld, Davydtchenko meticulously photographs his tattoos. Three Michelin stars, for example, feed into a system of symbols and codes that speaks to the dark aspirations of this gastronomical practice.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Davydtchenko’s self-administration of an alternative vaccine, PERFTORAN — which involved eating a live bat in front of the European Parliament — was designed as another parallel model of living away from his vision of a corrupt capitalist system. Reacting against pharmaceutical companies’ financial exploitation of the pandemic and the lack of publicly available vaccinations, the artist intended to offer a substitute for immunization beyond the work of corporations. Ingesting the animal alive was seen as the most ‘organic’ method of nutrition.
