I'd be perfectly fine with tuff on crime rhetoric if bankers, hedge fund agents and private equity goons had to do their time along side of gang bangers ( assuming they do any time at all) when they collapse the economy and ruin the lives of millions of people or if every time a business was raided for it illegal alien labor the boss/owner was also facing an automatic 15 years in prison.

My immensely relevant contribution to this nuanced discussion is to point to the fact that crime in its violent forms is a symptom of societal ills like unequal distribution of wealth in a wealthy society. While I agree that the public has a legitimate interest in being protected from these symptoms, any society that not only sees crime as a disease that can be eradicated by isolating the germs/ criminals from society but treats prisons as another opportunity for profit (the fact that many prisons in the US are run by private companies is mindblowing to me) will have a hard time reducing crime and the number of assholes.

It's very difficult in the United States to have any kind of conversation like this though because the right wing has been able to demagogue the discuss so viciously that it becomes twisted into some kind of narrative the equals "liberals are weirdos who want to pay for sex changes for rapists"

It's also difficult when the criminals themselves are the ones writing the laws ( ie the Paulson Proposal), which is one of the reasons I think it's a joke when libertarians try to argue small government would some how lead to less corruption, it doesn't matter how small the government is if Goldman Sachs executives are still the ones in the upper echelons of power.
